A large portion of these issues originate from the presentation of free enterprise, which has implied quick industrialisation at a pace hard to stay aware of. Ecological issues emerging from free enterprise are abuse of land and characteristic assets, with decimating impacts. Quick populace development has seen an expansion in air contamination and has additionally been a significant issue in creating nations. This paper will take a gander at a portion of the significant ecological issues in Japan, China and Indonesia. It will likewise take a gander at what governments and transnational associations have done to address them. At present, ecological issues are populace, water eutrophication, air contamination, squander the board, nature protection, compound administration and global co-activity for natural conservationâ [1]â . Japan at present has one of the universes most noteworthy futures at 81.25 and positioned at the tenth most populated nation with 127 million in 2006â [2]â . It has been foreseen that because of falling birth-rates the populace will be lower in the long haul, yet the present maturing populace will ascend from 6% to 15% by 2025â [3]â . One issue is the manner by which the littler, more youthful working ages will bolster the bigger maturing generationsâ [4]â and what designs the administration has in store to address these issues. From an ecological perspective, on one hand the workforce and more youthful ages add to the economy, thus balance out their own more prominent vitality utilization. Anyway it is believed that the more established age will eventually devour more vitality through the private sectorâ [5]â . Another issue is the manner by which to keep Japans humble common assets for example land, air and water sound for future generationsâ [6]â to appreciate. Lake Biwa gives a genuine case of water eutrophication. Post Second World War financial exercises prompted monetary development of Japanâ [7]â . Because of no information on water quality administration, defilement from nearby industry and rural spillover prompted quick and exceptional contamination and decay of many water frameworks for example Lake Biwas microscopic fish biomass, red and bluegreen green growth blossoms and possible high pace of eutrophicationà [8]à .The presentation of wastewater treatment, prohibiting of specific cleansers containing polyphosphates and development of wetlands to help seepage by neighborhood government and network endeavors prompted a stop in degradationâ [9]â . Simultaneously as Lake Biwa, Minamata Bay was being harmed. Minamata Disease was not found until it was understood that roughly 4000 victimsâ [10]â had in like manner the reality they had all eaten fish from the Minamata Bay. Following quite a while of testing, alongside fights from the Nippon Chisso Company who had an imperfect creation process for acetaldehyde, it was at long last established that gigantic measures of mercury had been dumped into the inlet by a similar organization, and had caused a lot of anguish and deathâ [11]â . Industrialisation has caused air contamination to be a significant issue in Japan. During the 1950s and 60s it encountered levels of contamination 3-5 times higher than current national encompassing air quality standardsâ [12]â hence high paces of asthma and other respiratory illnessesâ [13]â Japans populace, restricted assets and past natural encounters have implied pushing toward progressively supportable turn of events. The administration has perceived the need to address these issues. The Millennium Project is one technique whereby the legislature is focused on accomplishing set Millennium Development Goals to help turn around universal issues of destitution and maintainable developmentâ [14]â . Simultaneously, ESRI (Economic and Social Research Institute) started an examination called An investigation on Economic Social Structure in the 21st Century, which oversees issues of maturing sway on the earth. Severe guidelines; solid observing capacities; upgrading of important authoritative system; setting new gauges and money related help for explore on reasonable advancements have been successful in the usage of natural policyâ [15]â . Family strategy was executed looking like annuity change; the presentation of the LTCI (Long Term Care Insurance) and its change in 2005â [16]â and Health Policyâ [17]â . All will be all manners by which the legislature and transnational associations have endeavored to address the ecological issues. China As indicated by Thavasi and Ramakrishna, China speaks to 20% of the worldwide populace with 1.3 billion individuals. There is no uncertainty that the urbanization of the Chinese populace and ecological issues are straightforwardly associated. The connection between populace development, the requirement for financial development and vitality utilization tragically covers with farming, regular assets and mechanical exercises. This cover is has a negative effect upon human wellbeing and the prompt condition, and as per Banister is hopeless in the medium termâ [18]â . Many would concur that air contamination is one of Chinas major natural issues and is dictated by some to be one of the main sources of death. It is caused for the most part by consuming of petroleum derivatives for power creation and transportâ [19]â . The vehicle part has developed related to the populace over ongoing decades. The utilization of oil for transport expanded on a normal 6.7% every year somewhere in the range of 1990 and 2002. In spite of the fact that China was an essential maker of oil, they started bringing in 1996 as utilization exceeded produce. By 2007 Chinas net oil imports including rough and refined oil based commodities had expanded quickly at a surprising pace of 22 percent every year, arriving at 197 million tons in 2007â [20]â . About 90% of the fuel used to create power from comprises of coal, making warm force stations a significant wellspring of concentrated contamination. This contamination comprises of essential particles and S0㠢ââ¬Å¡Ã¢â¬Å¡ emanations, of which China is named 99 on the planet dependent on its C0㠢ââ¬Å¡Ã¢â¬Å¡ discharges per capitaâ [21]â . Bigger force plants are more productive as far as coal use than littler plants since they have higher burning effectiveness, so less coal is expected to make a similar measure of intensity. Additionally, the taller smoke heaps of the bigger force plants scatter contamination over an a lot bigger territory causing them to show up less harming per ton than the littler plants, whose contamination is spread over a progressively focused areaâ [22]â . Government procedures have been to shut down the littler plants, limit mining of high - sulfur coal and energize empower high stacks on power plants. These methodologies were insufficient to keep emanations underneath the discharge guidelines. In 2004 the administration executed an announcement to raise expenses for sulfur discharges. Every single new plant will introduce desulphurisation and more seasoned plants will introduce over timeâ [23]â . Most as of late, the administration intend to lessen sulfur outflows is to introduce (FGD) pipe gas desulphurisation so that by2010, discharges will be decreased by 6 000 million tonsâ [24]â . Except for concrete assembling which is spread all through urban and rustic regions, substantial industry, for example, compound assembling plants and enormous iron and steel factories were a significant piece of Chinas economy before. By methods for government arrangement of the time, these plants and factories were constructed near urban communities to make business and increment economyâ [25]â . Human presentation to these and other air toxins can cause medical problems, for example, respiratory ailments, ceaseless bronchitis, skin and eye bothering, constant and obstructive pneumonic infection, aspiratory coronary illness, asthma and lung cancerâ [26]â Water quality has additionally been influenced by industry. Populace development prompted extension of urban areas and industry. This brought about a huge increment of freshwater water social angling, more dumped mechanical waste, agrarian overflow, and sewerage which has caused quick decrease of Chinas water flexibly and like Japan, the exacerbating eutrophication of lakesâ [27]â . Somewhere in the range of 2000 and 2005, an expansion from 30% to 45% in wastewater treatment ought to have seen an easing back down of eutrophication. Be that as it may, because of the referenced extension, the measure of wastewater entering the lakes keeps on expanding as needs be. The four trophic conditions of a lake are ogliotrophic being generally unadulterated, mesotrophic, eutrophic and hypereutrophic being for all intents and purposes dead. To come to the hypereutrophic state could take a huge number of a long time if by any means. Anyway the waste constantly enters the lakes at such a rate, that it has caused some like Dianche Lake, to change from eutrophic to hypereutrophic in under 20 yearsâ [28]â . Measures actualized by the legislature to lessen water contamination incorporate structure more wastewater plants and sewer assortment frameworks, advancing clean creation in industrial facilities, control of types and amounts of pesticides utilized, and all the more naturally well disposed techniques for water system. Research on conservative innovations into avoidance of harm from composts is likewise being directed by the legislature related to nearby communitiesâ [29]â . South-east Asia The most significant weights on Japans condition today begin from transport, agribusiness, industry and, especially, the development of vitality request and private last utilization. Need natural issues incorporate urban air contamination (NOx, suspended particulate issue, toxics), squander the board, water eutrophication, nature protection, environmental change, concoction the executives and global co-activity for natural protection. The Ministry of the Environment was set up in 2001, 30 years after the Japan Environment Agency (which it supplanted), with extende Frank Howellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07423653539859340315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1447124041342611485.post-7891941438730557512020-07-12T18:04:00.001-07:002020-07-12T18:04:02.994-07:00My Summer of Memoir 5 Memoirs to Add to Your Reading ListMy Summer of Memoir 5 Memoirs to Add to Your Reading List I read a lot of memoirs. Itâs more personal, and often more fun, than straight autobiography. And I donât like delineating strictly between âtruthâ and fiction, but I do like gleaning more about the lives of my favorite writers. Iâm reading (or have already read) a lot of memoir this summer. Sherman Alexieâs You Donât Have to Say You Love Me: A Memoir Alexie has been one of of my favorite authors since I read the Absolutely True Diary, so I knew I would pick up his new memoir You Donât Have to Say You Love Me. What I didnât know was that I would be captivated by it. Itâs large, at 464 pages, evenly split between poetry and prose. But I read it in 4 days. This is Alexieâs Eulogy to his mother. Itâs also a poetic meditation on life, mental illness, the reservation, and that all familiar memoir narrative of leaving home. Alexie never claims to be writing fact: in fact at many points throughout the book he points out the flaws of his memory, the lies his family told him, and his struggles post brain surgery. But what Alexie so powerfully expresses is the difference between fact and truth, a truth born of emotion, love, and trauma, regardless of the fact. Even if youâve never read Alexie or donât like memoir, read this book. On paper, I have very little in common with Alexie. But Alexieâs recounting of his leaving home, escape into fiction, and struggles with mental illness made me feel, for 464 pages, that we had everything in common. Roxane Gayâs Hunger. Again, I already loved Roxane Gay. Her earlier works, be it Bad Feminist or essays across the internet, have been popular and important. But Hunger is emotionally raw. Memoirs are often confessional, exposing ideas that are often left unsaid. But Gayâs painful descriptions of her rape, trauma, and struggle with weight are so often unspoken itâs jarring and painful to read. But itâs important and beautiful. Gay, as only she can do, seamlessly weaves narrative memoir with cultural critiques of everything from celebrity weight loss endorsements to the difficulties of air travel. This isnât an easy read, and I put it down often, but itâs worth every moment of discomfort. Jesmyn Wards The Men We Reaped Iâm late to the program on this one, having never read National Book Award Winner Jesmyn Ward before this summer. I picked up The Fire This Time anthology after realizing there was a piece in it by Natasha Tretheway, one of my favorite poets. I was enthralled by Wardâs writng in this volume and immediately ordered The Men We Reaped and Salvage the Bones (which I dropped in a little free library in Nashville, I canât resist them). The Men We Reaped is Wardâs memoir, delineated by the tragic deathâs of important African American men in her life, closing with the young death of her brother. Interspersed between these strories are flashbacks to Wardâs childhood in Mississippi. Eventually, the flashbacks meet the present, where she recounts the story of her brother. Itâs both political and personal and certainly worth a read, especially in the context of Black Lives Matter and continued police violence against African Americans. North Toward Home by Willie Morris Published in 1967, North Toward Home is not a new read. Itâs the first in this list that I havenât yet read. My MA advisor recommended it to me years ago and I just got around to picking it up this summer. Knowing my love of Civil Rights history, coming of age memoir, and the South it seems a perfect fit. Iâm excited to read it this summer. The Diary of Anne Frank Okay, Iâm not sure if this is a memoir in the same way (it is a diary, after all). Whatâs more, I am admitting that I have never read it. In middle school, when it seemed everyone I knew was reading The Diary of Anne Frank, I refused to read anything I considered âsadâ (I know). So here I am, a 25 year old lover of memoirs and histories who has never read The Diary of Anne Frank. That ends this summer. Iâm just realizing how different this list is from a typical âsummer readsâ list. But here it does: some serious and seriously beautiful reading for that summer list. The polysemic nature of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Othello means that throughout time, different cultures have found certain readings of particular characters more relevant than others. For example, there are many possible readings of Desdemona, but two of the more dominant interpretations include seeing her as the ideal wife who falls victim to an abusive husband and viewing Desdemona as a progressive woman who contributed to her downfall by being outspoken and challenging the position of women in her time. Both readings are relevant to contemporary society especially when you take into consideration the role feminism has played in shaping modern thinking and the number of abusive relationships portrayed in our media. However as will be shown,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¢ Many female characters in movies perform functional roles that provide a love interest and victim for heroes to save. The view that women should be innocent and faithful is a very old cultural assumption that is still relevant today. A reading that constructs Desdemona as the innocent and pure victim will be more relevant to contemporary society because most audience members will feel comfortable with this type of representation. Although a reading that challenges the traditional roles of women in society maybe beneficial to the community, it is also more likely to be rejected by segments of the community who feel uncomfortable with the commentary it makes on society. Therefore, a reading of Desdemona that perpetrates stereotypes by relying on traditional discourses of femininity prevalent in our media will be the more relevant to modern audiences.ââ¬â¢ Desdemona is a character that can be read in multiple ways, some of which are more relevant to contemporary society than others. Desdemona can be interpreted as the ââ¬Å"good womanâ⬠who despite displaying great virtues is murdered by her jealous husband or as a modern woman challenging oppressive societal values. Both readings are relevant to modern society however interpreting Desdemona, as the innocent victim is more relevant for contemporary society as audiences are more familiar with this Frank Howellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07423653539859340315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1447124041342611485.post-2789639493696917942020-05-06T23:03:00.001-07:002020-05-06T23:03:37.488-07:00Overview (Salinas). As of the development of economy, the consumption habits in the younger generation shows some very different characteristics from their parentsââ¬â¢ generations. The objective of this study is to explore the transmissions of such consumerist cultures among the youths in Malaysia. In this study, our researchers investigate how cultural symbols are conserved through its core values by collecting the young peopleââ¬â¢s ideas, attitudes, and beliefs about the various cultures of material consumption portrayed or adopted, and how the young generations in Malaysia challenge the patterns of their own culture. Purposeful sampling strategy (Given, 2008) was used to select participants who have been exposed to the consumerist cultures in Malaysia, so as to analyze how their immediate environment affects and relates to them. A qualitative method of research was used, and interviews were conducted with the participants. Participants were identified customers in Bangsar Village, the high-end shopping mall in the very metropolitan city of Kuala Lumpurââ¬â¢s upper class estate regions, and the researchers had face to face interviews with these participants. 2. Current Situation in Malaysia As Malaysiaââ¬â¢s markets which cater for consumer demands and habits are rapidly growing, and population and commercial growths are increasing drastically, the consumption habits have also been changing constantly in the purchasing power of the population, especially youth-oriented consumerism (Noor, 1996). Some reasons result in the evolution of consumption habits in Malaysian youths. One reason is the increasing level of wealth, where young people enjoy spending freedom and choice, either through the contemporary luxury of receiving allowances from their parents, or start working by an early age, either as a part-time or full-time employee. Another reason is, more and more young people are receiving higher levels of education, and as a result, they can earn higher salaries when they graduate, and also learn of the different consumption cultures from during their study. One of the most influential effects is the mass media, such as the internet and the television, which has played an important role in shaping the young generationââ¬â¢s consumption attitudes (Noor, 1996). Western consumerist cultures have deeply influenced the beliefs of the Malaysia youths, thus they have become more westernized and this influence is not just happening in Malaysia, but globally as well (Singhapakdi et al, 1999). However, comparing Malaysian to other western cultures such as in that in the United States, Singhapakdi et al (1999) suggests that there is a difference, either in terms of self-congruence, or that of cultural learning. It is believed other countries such as neighboring Singapore and Indonesia, have been adopting the similar western habits and cultures for quite some time. A consumeristââ¬â¢s general view of life can be described as consuming is a good thing, and the more consumption, the better (Dwyer, 2007). Therefore, there are no forms of ethnocentrism detected from the youths interviewed. The population of young Malaysian consumers under 25 years old reached about 43% in the whole of Malaysia in 2003 (Pricewaterhousecoopers, 2004). Therefore, this gigantic group of potential consumers is becoming the target of many marketing and promotional efforts (Koehn, 2007). Merchants and marketing professionals have used various methods and ways to influence and brainwash the younger generations into believing in their goods from the very early stages of life. The research is an effort to give a rudimentary insight on the consumerism activities among Malaysian young people. The Core Values of Consumerist Culture Consumerism is defined as ââ¬Å"believing that happiness is based on what you consumeâ⬠(Plato Volunteer Class, 2007). The young people who are influenced by todayââ¬â¢s consumerist cultures have an obviously different opinion from their parentsââ¬â¢ generationsââ¬â¢ consumption habits. Some of their parents have faced hardships in life, particularly during childhood and youth, compared to todayââ¬â¢s life of young people where many are over-privileged and even spoilt for choices of luxurious goods (Noor, 1996). Parents tend to think more about sustainability, which according to Plato Volunteer Classââ¬â¢s interpretation, is described as ââ¬Å"working to meet the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to eet their needsâ⬠(pp. 2). Sustainability is made up of three main factors: social, environment, and economics. Hence, these parents are considered to be quite thrifty; they tend to have the mentality of ââ¬Å"saving moneyâ⬠. Socially, our research found that youths nowadays tend to look to their idols for shared interests and self-images . Environmentally, there is an influx of international cultures around Malaysia, where internationalism, which according to Klein (2002) and Jain (1989), affects todayââ¬â¢s minds through globalization and localization strategies. Whereas economically, it is only normal that our current economy is rather well-off, where working adults can afford many of the branded goods and items published portrayed in stalls and advertised in the media. In families where the condition of life is better, parents would like to spend on more luxurious things such as furniture, electronic gadgets, comfortable and classy transportation, and investments in safer and healthier housing estates, citing an importance towards comfort and safety. Marketers who see this will utilize buyerââ¬â¢s sense of importance towards materials, and portray an item as a daily necessity (Klein, 2002). The more there is a need for an item, the better it is to publish it using methods of appeal, such as using actors and famous names to portray the item (Koehn, 2007). However, many analysts suggest this is only a method of advertisement, and many youths nowadays are affected by their idols to buy goods which they in fact do not need, or already have; hence, the younger generation today are likely to be seen as taking for granted the basic needs required, and focusing more on narrow lines of goods (Koehn, 2007). Surprisingly, one interviewee mentioned the need to identify needs instead of wants, and quoted a phrase that was exposed to him, ââ¬Å"when you keep buying things that you do not need, one day you will have to sell off the things you needâ⬠. This is the perfect example of over-spending on unnecessary items, until one day when we least expect it, we are faced with financial difficulties, and we are in need of cash; the only way to get cash is to liquidate our possessions and properties that we own (Cairns, 2006). Self-control, Item Pricing and Consumerist Behaviour Young people think they should spend money on anything that they like if the stuff is comfortable to them, citing a type of Hedonist culture within the community. Going shopping and looking for things they liked is a break for them to relax when they are stressed. At least spend a little bit, after spending they will feel happy. One of the interviewed participants, James Liu, mentioned that he is enjoying his consumerist habits. His consumerist style isnââ¬â¢t too luxurious, but he is fond of buying his idolsââ¬â¢ albums, posters and magazine. The reason for such consumerist habits is because he is very passionate in supporting idols. The idols are a part of his life, and he feels a connection with them whenever he hears the music, and sees them in the media. He enjoys his consumerist style, although it is quite different with the consumerist habits of his family members who are thrifty, as he finds that his consumerist style brings him happiness and entertainment. This shows that many young, and not to exclude, even older, consumers, enjoy the habit of spending on their interests if it brings them pleasure and productivity, without compromising their financial situation (Cairn, 2006). Hence, they think it is worthy for them to spend their money in that way as they enjoy what they are doing now. Markus is another Malaysian student and part-timer wonââ¬â¢t spend too much on luxurious things but branded stuff. He has such consumerist habits because he believes that branded stuffs have high quality and they can be used for a longer time. Since his family members are quite thrifty but most of his friends are heavy consumerists, we found that his consumerist habits swing between being thrifty and luxurious. He tries not to spend so much money on some items but he does buy branded stuffs. However, we found that his parents play a bigger role on affecting his consumerist habits than his friends. Although he will buy branded stuff, he will try hard to control his spending and he tries to follow his parents to make a budget on buying branded stuff. Besides that, in the interview, he had mentioned several times that he wonââ¬â¢t follow the trend as he thinks that trend will cause people to spend a lot. This shows that a significant number of youths nowadays enjoy spending money, not just for their needs, but for reasons of self-indulgence as well. One final participant brings into perspective the consumerist cultures around Jie Si, which is of luxury and comfort, but she has her own opinions. Although she sometimes agrees to her family membersââ¬â¢ and friendsââ¬â¢ willingness to spend on luxurious things, Jie Siââ¬â¢s has started to budget her expenses. She has such change because of her own experience. Her past experience of owning too many unnecessary items has caused her to be careful and good at identifying her needs. Items that are reasonable, and a habit of saving up for that particular item, are how she participates and carries out her styles as a consumer. Furthermore, she finds it has an indirect motivation for her to do something from buying and spending on an item. For example, she will feel like jogging often when she buys a pair of new running shoes. This serves to support Dwyerââ¬â¢s (2007) position on why people feel a sense of satisfaction and urge to spend on things, but only if that interest can be sustained for a long period of time. Many people spend heavily at one moment for things which they need, but only to see that that need is a temporary one, and there are many other alternatives to approach and deal with that need (Dwyer, 2007). Peer influence applies a vicious effect towards consumerist behaviours as well. For example, an interviewee mentioned that he was actually being looked down and laughed at by his friends from school, for not buying the latest set of stationery and textbooks for school. This shows that peer pressure does have a slight effect on forcing someone to spend on things just because they do not want to be left out of the pack (Koehn, 2007). Most of those young people know how to control themselves because they are considered teenagers and not working adults fully supporting their own lives. They see their parents work so hard and give their money to spend for daily expenses which come from their own pockets, so young people try not to spend so much of their parentsââ¬â¢ money but spend according to their own savings and salaries. They still try to find discounts and bargained goods if they feel the items desired are overpriced. Because of the large gap between theirs and their parentsââ¬â¢ generationsââ¬â¢ consumption ideas, some of them rarely get support from their parents on buying things. Young people do manage their budget. They just get pocket money from parents. They save money before getting the new item. They wonââ¬â¢t buy it that they canââ¬â¢t afford it. They try their best to earn money to support their habits by taking part time jobs. They want to learn to spend their own money and control their budget. Sometimes they think they should follow their parentsââ¬â¢ habits, by not spending so much so often. Since students are studying at same time, they have to pay a lot of money for their school fees. Some of them applied for government education loans, as it helps them settle their school fees problem. That ay they will get to spend on things they urge, without feeling worried or guilty about their financial situation with education. The younger generations think their ideal culture is one that does not follow trend but follow oneââ¬â¢s own comfort and sense of worth, while hoping their parents will support and follow their consumerist habits. They also hope their parents spend money on anything that they like. But the reality is their parents spend money on basic needs rather than on the things that they desire. However, in todayââ¬â¢s society, the older generations are learning to accept the social and economic changes spreading across the globe. Compared with previous times where people earn very little and there are very few brands available in the market, todayââ¬â¢s society is filled with branded goods, and any products which do not have a catchy name or sound to it, will eventually be written off and condemned into the abyss (Sirsi et al, 1996; Alden et al, 1999). When young people spend quite a lot of money on branded stuffs, their parents used to protest against their willingness to buy these expensive stuffs. At same time they know that young generationââ¬â¢s consumerist culture is different from them. Young people try to change their habits. Analysis Consumption behaviour among Malaysian youths shows inconsistent and irregular patterns ââ¬â they depend on brands and idols to help them identify and relate to an item or material. Some products depend highly on advertisement and marketing forms, while others are influenced and transmitted through peers and trends. There are some who emphasize on the need to feel comfort and satisfaction, where they like to buy branded stuff because they think most of the branded stuffs tend to be of higher quality and are more comfortable to wear. Moreover, branded goods tend to last longer. However, many also follow the consumer habits of their parents and surrounding friends: if they feel it is necessary, I will too. Expert guidance is always preferred to individual reviewing of materials and goods. Youths usually enjoy spending a lot of money on expensive food, branded stuff such as clothes, shoes, computers, phones, and fund other interests such as albums, posters and magazines of their singers or movie star idols. Youths adore their idols because they feel that when they are in a bad mood, the songs can bring them positive energy and feel relaxed and appy. Like their friends, young people buy original version and are against the pirated version, as they think this is the real support to their idols. The consumption habits of todayââ¬â¢s youths are affected by the western culture because of the easy access to information from todayââ¬â¢s forms of media (Sirsi et al, 1996), which emphasize a lot on the importance of brand. Sirsi et al (1996) also mentioned that intracultural variation (between experts and novices) have an important effect on consumerist habits and beliefs. Also, influences on their consumer habits come from family members and peers as well. Within the family, parents are the sole consumerists, and an example of their buying power and pattern will be transmitted toward their children. However, some youths disagree with their parentââ¬â¢s spending habits, and wishes for more flexibility; hence, they work to earn and spend on their own, that way their parents will have little or none to say about their behaviours and beliefs. Conclusion The results of the survey are helpful in identifying and stratifying the consumerist cultures of Malaysian youths, in addition to increasing our understanding of their consumerist ideas, attitudes and beliefs. The results indicate that the young generation of Malaysia prefer in pursuing pleasure by consuming. It is clear for all to acknowledge the differences seen between the consumption habits of the older and younger generations; the latter are often criticized by their elders for the voluptuous consumptions. Our report shows different sides of the youthââ¬â¢s consumption habits. Although they are very eager to own goods live trendy lifestyles, some of them understand their parentsââ¬â¢ labor in raising a family. However, the urge to spend is much stronger, and they tend to foresee what their parents have gone through during their age, and how the satiation was then. Parents tend to be more cautious when they spend, bearing in mind the financial burden they have now, and before. Hence the children try their best to reach goals on a more independent scale, ideally without parentsââ¬â¢ help, and sometimes even their knowledge, because they do not want their parents to worry or have a say. This money was taken through lies, theft and outright barbarity. After the war, Western Allies helped Jews reclaim their property, however many people, who were liberated by the Soviets, did not have this luxury. When families began to settle, and were in need of funds, they took it upon themselves to sue the establishments who had confiscated their possessions. Many companies and countries readily paid millions of dollars, however the largest payment, came from Germany itself. The World Jewish Congress estimates between 23-32 billion 1945 dollars were taken from Jews in Occupied Europe. (CQ researcher)This money was taken from jewish people through deceit, trickery and outright theft. In light of these occurrences, many jews put their savings in swi ss bank accounts. German officers also did the same with stolen money. After the war, the swiss banks kept this treasure they had amassed over a 12 year period. Other countries, such as Austria, and Poland stole precious possessions from Jewish families, such as rings, and trinkets. Personal items by the thousands were taken and used to make German Products. Things such as hair and fingernails were cut off and used to stuff pillows or to make cement. Some governments formed formal investigation committies to discover what was whos so to speak. The new nation of Israel, which was taken from the Palistinians by the british, and given to the victims of the Holocaust, sued Germany for 4.5 Billion dollars. The money is critical for Israel to buy arms in order to stop any forms of rebellion. Many jews form class action suits against companies such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, both of whom allegedly used jewish slaves to make vehicles. The United States Government creates a Holocaust claims commitee, to oversee and aid in the return of money and property. Many individual companies paid money, however the largestpayment came from Germany itself. Germany agreed to pay 14 billion dollars over a period of 10-14 years to victims of the Holocaust. The money that the Swiss banks had kept, was b eing repaid. Several banks together agreed to pay 4.7 billion dollars in total to Holocaust families.Austria, pays 150 million dollars over a period of 15 years. However, some do not want anything to do with this money. This is because the money is made of mothers rings and fathers teeth. (Joast) Indeed the method most of this money was taken was in such a way, that to profit from such a horrible occurrence as this, one would have to lack certain qualities that reside in ones conscious. However the this shows us that the Holocaust victims were human, and not 100% victims as was the old notion. Many individuals were very critical of people who sought comfort and closure through million dollar settlements. What was taken from the millions of human beings during the Holocaust will and can never be returned, however money, should be the last thing on peoples minds when thinking of this.In fact, 67% of the people currently suing germany and other nations about the Holocaust, were not vict ims themselves. (http://wjcic.mvb.org/hlcst/current/index/main.html)A price tag can never be put on a human life, and never should be. Asking for money, simply puts a price tag on one of the most horrifying chapters of mankind.Instead of asking for money, they should ask that Germany educate its young, that Switzerland uses the money it stole, to create a Holocaust memorial, that Poland build Jewish temples, but not fatten ones wallet. From that meeting of the minds came 10 recommended action steps for the region to take against future earthquakes. These 10 action steps apply to society at all levels, including individuals, businesses, and governments. This means that all of us who work for businesses and participate in government activities have ways to help beyond taking care of ourselves at home. This is not a checklist, but rather an outline of a permanent program. Not everyone can utilize all 10 steps, but everyone should try to carry out as many as possible. People elsewhere take part in a culture of preparedness for their regional hazard, whether they live in an area prone to hurricanes, tornados, blizzards or fires. Its different in earthquake country because the big events are rare and they occur without warning. Things on this list that may seem obvious in other places have yet to be learned in earthquake country à or, they were learned and forgotten, like the San Francisco region in the years after the 1906 quake. These action steps are crucial elements of a disaster-resilient civilization and serve 3 distinct purposes: making preparedness part of the regional culture, investing to reduce losses, and planning for recovery. Preparedness Know your risks. Study the buildings that you live in, work in or own: On what kind of ground are they sited? How might the transportation systems serving them be threatened? What seismic risks affect their lifelines? And how can they be made safer for you?Prepare to be self-sufficient. Not just your home, but your workplace too should be ready for 3 to 5 days without water, power or food. While this is the normal suggestion, FEMA suggests carrying up to 2 weeks worth of food and water.à Care for the most vulnerable. Individuals may be able to help their families and immediate neighbors, but people with special needs will need special preparations. Ensuring this necessary response for vulnerable populations and neighborhoods will take concerted, sustained action by governments.Collaborate on a regional response. Emergency responders already do this, but the effort should extend further. Government agencies and major industries must work together to help their regions prepare for ma jor earthquakes. This includes regional plans, training, and exercises as well as continuous public education. Loss Reduction Focus on dangerous buildings. Fixing buildings that are likely to collapse will save the most lives. Mitigation measures for these buildings include retrofitting, rebuilding and controlling occupancy to reduce exposure to risk. Governments and building owners, working with earthquake professionals, bear the most responsibility here.Ensure essential facilities function. Every facility needed for emergency response must be capable of not just surviving a large quake, but also remaining functional afterward. These include fire and police stations, hospitals, schools and shelters and emergency command posts. Much of this task is already a legal requirement in many states.Invest in critical infrastructure. Energy supplies, sewage, and water, roads, and bridges, rail lines and airports, dams, and levees, cellular communications the list is long of functions that must be ready for survival and quick recovery. Governments need to prioritize these and invest in retrofitting or rebuilding as much as they can while keeping a long-term perspective. Recovery Plan for regional housing. In the midst of disrupted infrastructure, uninhabitable buildings and widespread fires, displaced people will need relocation housing for both the short and the long term. Governments and major industries must plan for this in collaboration.Protect your financial recovery. Everyone à individuals, agencies, and businesses must estimate what their repair and recovery costs are likely to be after a major earthquake, then arrange a plan to cover those costs.Plan for regional economic recovery. Governments at all levels must collaborate with the insurance industry and major regional industries to ensure the provision of relief money for individuals and for communities. Timely funds are crucial for recovery, and the better the plans, the fewer mistakes will be made. His major works included ââ¬Å"notes on sculptureâ⬠, anti-Form, creation of minimalist key exemplars like rectangular beams and cubes which had no figuration. I would characterize Morrisââ¬â¢ status in art history as an influential art personality who changed the industry of art. This is due to his works that introduced indeterminacy and temporality in the field of art. According to Morris, (3), Morris defines the most fundamental components of sculpture as to include: mass which has to do with the bulk of the sculpture. This is important because it defines the sculptureââ¬â¢s edges the second one is space. This is that air around the given solid sculpture. It is important for linking separate sculpture parts and defines the sculpture edges. Additionally it can provide areas of emptiness in the sculpture when enclosed by a part of the very sculpture. Color, dimension, flatness and texture may also be some important elements of a sculpture including shape. Gestalt is a term used to refer to a pattern or configuration of elements that are unified as a whole. As such it implies some pattern. Morris used pyramids, cubes and polyhedrons that are regular to achieve this. He asserted that this forms when used can result in to one achieving a very strong sensation of Gestalt. Gestalt, thus he described to be patterns or even configurations that the whole is considered to produce greater significance that is better than when the parts are individually considered and are also different. Gestalt is generally the pattern brought by the whole and not an individual piece of the whole. Indeed Morris claims that sculptures exist in a situation and not as self-contained forms. This he asserts by arguing that sculptures communicate situations that the artist needed to depict (Morris, 17). Political factors: government policy can have impact on the economy and business. By imposing higher tax on fast food industry government can influence the business and its profitability in a country where the business is situated. Government can fix up minimum wages or bonus for workers in chin stores that can inflate the wage bills of a fast food chain like McDonald. Economic factors: interest rates, taxation changes, economic growth, inflation and exchange rates ruling in the country of operation always affect the business. Many governments consider fast food stores as luxurious segment of business and impose higher taxes. Higher interest rates often deter investment because of higher costs for borrowing funds. Inflation keeps the fast food prices higher and deters youths the target customers to eat in McDonalds. Social factors: Changes in social trends can have impact on the demand for a McDonald's products. Workers may not be sufficiently available or not willing to work for the prescribed wage and benefit structure. The aging population in UK and Japan have made the labour cost higher. Young Turks who visit fast food chains more frequently prefer young faces to serve. Older workers claim longer and higher pension. Technological factors: new technologies create new products and new processes that can reduce costs, improve quality and lead to innovation. These new developments always benefit consumers as well as the organisations providing the products. McDonald can afford introducing these newer technologies better and provide benefits to its consumers. Environmental factors: The growing desire to protect the environment is having an impact on many industries and fast food is one of those. Government imposes many rules in order to protect environment. Environmentalists always campaign and raise issues on this external factor that is gaining importance everyday. Legal factors: legal environment in which firms operate is very vital. Significant legal changes in UK have affected McDonald. For example an increase in the minimum wage and greater requirements for firms to recycle. Legal changes usually affect a firm's costs. The planning and prosperity of a venture abroad is guaranteed only when the macro environment of the country where the business is operating is congenial enough to promote the business. For example the political system of the country is smooth enough to let the investment fructify and provide appreciable returns. The nature of government whether democratic or communist or military or dictatorship is a determinant factor. The political scenario, its local government, labour profile, leadership, media industry profile and general populace are important considerations. The social and cultural system of the country should also enable the local populace to accept the product for consumption. Titus loved and cherished his daughter Lavinia. He was a traditionalist, and stuck by his morals. Titus was brave. He showed he was loyal to those he cared for. He honored his family. Titus was a respected soldier and leader. Titus was a decent man because he loved and cherished his daughter Lavinia. Being Lavinia was his only daughter of twenty-six children; he spoke highly of her. In act 1, Titus addresses the public by saying "Kind Rome, that hast thus loving reserved, The cordial of mine age to glad my heart. Lavinia live, outlive thy father's days, and fame's eternal date, for virtues praise" (138). He is describing the link between Lavinia and his heart, and telling her to outlive, and go beyond him. In act 3 Titus shows he would do anything for Lavinia after her hands were chopped off. He says "Give me a sword, I'll chop off my hands too" (194). Being willing to sacrifice his own hands for his daughter shows his deep love for her. Lavinia means so much to Titus, that in act 3 he explains "But that which gives my soul the greatest spurn, Is dear Lavinia, dearer than my soul" (195), meaning his dear Lavinia's misery is giving his soul the greatest amount of hurt. Af ter comparing Ovid's description of the forest to where Titus and his sons hunted, he cries out "O' had we never, never hunted there! Patterned by that the poet here describes, By nature made for murders and for rapes" (214). Titus cares so much for his daughter that he is blaming himself for hunting in a place that is set for a murder or rape to occur. Being a traditionalist is another quality that made Titus an honorable man. In act 1 Titus shows his respect for religious tradition by telling Tamora, "Alive and dead, and for their brethren slain, Religiously they ask a sacrifice. To this your son is marked, and die he must, T'appease their groaning shadows that are gone" (135). He is obeying religion and will kill Tamora's oldest son (Alarbus), for those who have sinned in his family. When Alarbus is being buried in act 1, Titus makes a speech that states "In peace and honour rest you here, my sons; Rome's readiest champions, repose you here in rest, Secure from worldly chances and mishaps. Instead when I closed my eyes I saw Damon, his legs curled around a hard wooden chair, his arms bound in ropes. His skin bled, the droplets a dark maroon where the vervain-soaked ropes bit into his flesh. Next came the images of Callie, her flame-colored hair flowing behind her, her eyes lit with a frightening passion. She and her father danced around Damon, my brothers form prone on the ground. They threw their hands in the air tauntingly, gripping wooden stakes, the ends so sharpened they reached a fine point. Their movements became more frenzied as they approached, readying their weapons But worst of all were the visions of Katherine. I would see her, looking beautiful as always, her porcelain face hovering above mine and her glossy mane tickling my shoulders. With a coy, knowing smile she would lean toward me, and then she would open her mouth. Her fangs glinted in the lamp light as they plunged into my neck. My eyes flew open. Sleep would not afford me any rest. My mind went to memories of Katherine. The human part of meââ¬âor what was left of itââ¬âhated her with every fiber of my being. My hand curled into a fist involuntarily when I thought of her, and how shed destroyed my family. But the vampire part of me missed what shed representedââ¬âstability and love. And just as that part of my soul would last for eternity, so too would the part of me that longed for her. I wanted her now, beside me, curled up in my sheets. I wanted her to lean against the windowsill and listen as I told her about Damon, and tell me, in her calm, even cold, matter-of-fact way what to do. Being with Katherine had made me fearless, confident. She had made everything seem possible. Even though I trusted Lexi, I knew she didnt trust me to take care of things she didnt believe that any plan I had would work. That was why Lexi reminded me so often of all the obstacles in my path. I longed for the Katherine I had fallen for, the one who seemed both fearless and to truly care for me. I wanted her by my side right now so I would feel less alone. But I knew that couldnt be. That Katherine had never really existed. Besides, she was gone, and she was never coming back. The door opened, and Lexi stood there, a goblet of animal blood in her hands. She brought it to my lips. I took a few deep sips, despite the disgust it called up in me. When I had drained the cup, she put it on the nightstand, then brushed my hair off my forehead. ââ¬Å"Are you still going to the fight tonight?â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you going to try to stop me?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠Lexi bit her lip. ââ¬Å"Not so long as you simply leave it at saving your brother. Revenge is for humansââ¬âand killing Gallagher wont teach humans any lesson.â⬠I nodded, all the while knowing Id use brute force if it was necessary to free Damon. ââ¬Å"Good.â⬠Lexi turned to leave. Halfway toward the door, she turned back and locked eyes with me, and her expression softened. ââ¬Å"Youve cheated death once. I hope youll cheat it a second time.â⬠After dressing, I walked to Lake Road with human speed. By the time I got there, it was past dusk. Lanterns and torches were set up around the perimeter of the fairgrounds, making the entire area look as if it was bathed in daylight. The circus tent was striped red and white, and surrounded by midway games and individual booths. ââ¬Å"Fortunes Told!â⬠a poster above one read. ââ¬Å"See the Worlds Ugliest Womanââ¬âIf You Dare!â⬠proclaimed another. I could hear the chattering of some type of animal coming from a far corner, but I couldnt get a sense of where Damon was. Just then, Callie walked out of the main tent, trailed by her father and her two henchmen. She was wearing the same pair of overalls shed had on the night before over a mans linen shirt, and her hair fell around her shoulders. There was a smudge of dirt beneath her eye. I had a sudden urge to wipe it away but stuck my hands in my pocket instead. ââ¬Å"Stefan!â⬠she called, her face breaking into a smile. ââ¬Å"Youre here. Father, this is the man I told you about.â⬠Mr. Gallagher looked even more imposing up close. He towered above me, his dark brows knitted together. I kept my expression open, innocent. Lexi said Gallagher was a skilled vampire hunterââ¬âwould he be able to detect the truth just by staring at me? ââ¬Å"My daughter says youre curious about vampires,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Prove youre serious and work the ticket counter. Then we can talk.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, sir.â⬠I nodded, feeling like Stefan the obedient child. ââ¬Å"And, boy?â⬠Gallagher asked, turning back toward me. ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠ââ¬Å"You want to place a bet on the fight? Winnerll take a lot. Could make you a fortune.â⬠He raised an eyebrow. My eyes narrowed, and blood screamed through my veins, fast and hot. How dare this man ask me to bet on my brothers life? How dare he act so self-important when I could rip his throat out in an instant? ââ¬Å"Stefan?â⬠Callie asked warily. Forcing myself to calm down, I reached into the pockets of my well-worn britches and pulled them inside out. ââ¬Å"Im afraid I have no money, sir. Thats why Im so grateful to have this job.â⬠Gallagher took a step closer to me. ââ¬Å"You say youre from Mississippi, boy?â⬠He gazed at me curiously. ââ¬Å"Your accent sounds more northernââ¬âmaybe Virginian.â⬠ââ¬Å"My parents were from Virginia. I suppose their accent rubbed off on me,â⬠I said in as casual a voice as I could muster. After a long moment, he nodded. ââ¬Å"Well, when you rustle up some currency, come find me. In the meantime, Callie will show you the ropes. And son?â⬠he called, turning on his heel. ââ¬Å"Yes, sir?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"Ill be watching you.â⬠Chapter 17 Dont be bothered by him,â⬠Callie said, once her father was a safe distance away. ââ¬Å"Im not,â⬠I lied. Her green eyes flicked over me, as if she didnt believe my words. But she didnt press the issue. ââ¬Å"Ill give you a quick tour,â⬠she said, taking me into one of the smaller tents. In a corner, a woman was hunched over a mirror. She turned, and I took a step back. Her face was covered with tattoos, which, upon closer inspection, were courtesy of rapidly drying India ink. ââ¬Å"The tattooed woman,â⬠Callie said. ââ¬Å"And the conjoined twins.â⬠The woman and the twins next to her waved at us. The twins bodies were connected at the hip. They were beautiful, with blond hair and sad expressions. A man with flippers instead of arms whispered something in one of their ears. They glanced at each other, then broke into laughter. ââ¬Å"This is the show.â⬠Callie opened her hands wide, and for the first time I noticed a wooden stake dangling on a silver chain from her wrist. She also had a sprig of vervain tucked behind her ear. ââ¬Å"Miss Callie!â⬠A hulking, seven-foot-tall mountain of a man ducked under the door of the tent and walked toward us. He picked her up by her tiny waist and swung her around. ââ¬Å"Arnold!â⬠she said gleefully. ââ¬Å"The worlds strongest man. Married to the bearded lady,â⬠she explained to me before looking back up at Arnold. ââ¬Å"How is Caroline feeling?â⬠The giant shrugged. ââ¬Å"Shes doing well. Cant wait to come back and introduce everyone to the babies.â⬠ââ¬Å"They just had twins!â⬠Callie said fondly. I nodded my greeting to the man and gazed over Callies shoulder. Where were they keeping Damon? ââ¬Å"Are you okay?â⬠Callie asked. She brushed my arm, and I flinched when the vervain touched my skin. ââ¬Å"I just need air,â⬠I said, bursting out of the tent. Callie ran after me. ââ¬Å"Im sorry, Stefan,â⬠she said, her voice cold. ââ¬Å"Some people dont like it here. Theyre not comfortable. But somehow I thought youd be different.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, its not that.â⬠Even surrounded by these human curiosities, I was the biggest freak of them all: the vampire who pretended to be human. ââ¬Å"Ive just got a lot on my mind. I promise you, I like it here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠she said, not sounding quite convinced. But she continued to lead me farther into the grounds. We passed a two-headed cat, a sad-looking monkey playing ââ¬Å"Old Tom Dooleyâ⬠on a harmonica, and the skeleton of what a sign declared to be a sea monster. Some freaks milling around were obviously actors, wearing fabric tubes filled with straw to simulate extra limbs, while others had been born that way. ââ¬Å"Come with me,â⬠Callie said as she tugged on my arm. But I stayed. A black iron wagon rolled up to the tent, similar to the one Father had used to round up vampires during the Mystic Falls siege. It stopped, and the driver jumped from the cart. Immediately, five burly men rushed up with stakes. Once they were in place, the driver unlocked the back of the wagon. The scent of vervain wafted in the air, causing my joints to ache. Damon. ââ¬Å"And theres your vampire,â⬠Callie said, her mouth set in a firm line as all five men dragged Damon from the back of the wagon. One burly man, his sweat-stained shirt rolled at the sleeves, kept a stake positioned firmly over his heart. ââ¬Å"Gentle now, Jasper! We need him alive before the fight!â⬠Callie called, her voice sharp. Damon turned, baring his teeth in our direction. I saw surprise in his eyes, which quickly turned into contempt. ââ¬Å"My little brother, the good Samaritan,â⬠he whispered under his breath, barely moving his jaw. Luckily, he said it low enough that only I heard. His voice sent a tremor through my body. Callie cocked her head, and I realized how risky it was for Damon and me to be in such close proximity. Would spite cause him to call me out as a fellow demon? ââ¬Å"Are you sure I cant help with the vampire?â⬠I asked her. ââ¬Å"You heard my father. Well start you at the ticket counter. And if anyone tries to sneak in, let Buck handle them,â⬠she said, gesturing to the hulking man hovering several paces behind her like a distended shadow. A commotion sounded in front of the tent. Callie let out a whistle as we approached. The front flap was closed tight, and a mass of people had surrounded a wooden ticket booth. Some, dressed in tattered britches and with dirt-stained hands, were clearly from the shantytown surrounding the lake. But others were dressed in their finest: the men in top hats and silk smoking jackets, the women in feather-adorned hats and silk dresses, fur stoles draped around their bosoms. Callie turned to me, her eyes shining. ââ¬Å"Its never been so busy. Dads going to be so happy!â⬠she said, clapping her hands together. ââ¬Å"Now, go help Buck,â⬠she commanded before running back around the tent. I stood in the wooden booth at the entrance, listening for Damon. But instead my ears filled with snatches of human conversation. ââ¬Å"Ive got a hundred dollars on the lion.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, the vampire. Monsters always win over beasts.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ive told this pretty lady here that she owes me a kiss if the beast wins.â⬠One man hiccupped, obviously drunk. I ground my teeth, wanting to lash out, to bite each and every one of them, to teach them a lesson. But I remembered Lexis words about revenge. Killing these men would not help Damon. A hand clapped my shoulder. I whirled around, ready to bare my teeth. It was Gallagher, his face flushed with excitement. ââ¬Å"We have to hustle, son! The fights about to start, and the more we pack em in, the bigger the payday.â⬠He hopped on an overturned apple crate standing just outside the entrance. ââ¬Å"Step right up, folks! Welcome to my Odditorium! See the worlds ugliest woman, marvel at the worlds strongest man! But thats just the warm-up act. Because tonight, we have a battle royale, the likes of which have never been seen. Monster versus Beast. Who will win? And who wants to bet? Because this is one death that will lead to riches for some.â⬠The crowd pressed in more tightly around me, swarming like a mass of hungry insects. Gallagher grinned at me. ââ¬Å"Get em in, and get em bidding.â⬠And so I held out my hand, collecting their coins and orange stubs of paper, all the while resisting the urge to reach out and snap their necks, as easily as I would a twig branch, and drink the liquid within. At some point in our life we may be faced with the question, ââ¬Å"Is hypnosis real?â⬠The question can be presented anytime and anywhere. Whether it takes place before your eyes at the county fair or in the office of a psychiatrist, hypnotherapy is sure to raise some interest. The issue at hand, for most individuals, is trying to debunk as to whether or not one can actually rely on hypnotherapy. Does hypnotherapy truly resolve a problem or is the whole act just a placebo effect to suppress memories or habits? What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is the act of an individual guided through relaxation, and intense concentration that is focused on specific thoughts or actions (Hypnotherapy-Hypnosis 1). There are two subtypes of hypnotherapy, the two forms being suggestive hypnotherapy and analysis hypnotherapy. Through suggestive hypnotherapy, a certified professional can provide the patient with alternatives, methods of dealing with behaviors or perceptions they may be dealing with. Analysis therapy involves a certified professional first setting the foundation by revealing the trauma, then suggesting alternatives, creating a long-term positive effect. When taking the hypnotherapy approach, the most effective approach is for individuals who suffer from obstacles such as: irrational fears, excessive eating, procrastination, anxiety, etc. Individuals who suffer from habits such as these, as well as other habits, can expect a positive outcome Frank Howellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07423653539859340315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1447124041342611485.post-66491299124302142212019-12-30T22:40:00.001-08:002019-12-30T22:40:04.277-08:00The Treatment Of Mental Illness - 1153 Words The shutdown of state mental hospitals and lack of available financial and institutional resources force mentally ill people to the United States Judicial System for mental health. Every year thousands of people are arrested for various crimes and they are sent to jail. Sixteen percent of these people have some type of mental health problem (Public Broadcasting System , 2001). When we consider that the United States has the largest incarcerated population in the world at 2.2 million, this number is staggering (Anasseril E. Daniel, 2007). This is about 1% of the entire population of the United States. There are many reasons as to why the situation has taken such a bad turn and when the history of the treatment of mental illness is examined one can see how the situation developed into the inhumane disaster it is today. Hippocrates was the first to recognize that mental illness was due to ââ¬Ëdisturbed physiologyââ¬â¢ as opposed to ââ¬Ëdispleasure of the gods or evidence of dem onic possessionââ¬â¢. It was not until about one thousand years later that the first place designated for the mentally ill came to be in 15th century Spain. Before the 15th century, it was largely up to individualââ¬â¢s families to care for them. By the 17th century, society was ââ¬Ëoften housing them with handicapped people, vagrants, and delinquents. Those considered insane are increasingly treated inhumanely, often chained to walls and kept in dungeonsââ¬â¢. Instead think of Beowulf: The Graphic Novel. A Scandinavian classic portrayed in a series of vividly colored illustrations. While English majors and Literature enthusiasts alike cringe at such a decimation of literary art, teachers jump for joy at a potential reading tool. In our ever-changing society, novels are being translated into comics, graphic novels, and even manga. The illustrated pages should be used to promote reading and writing. Everyone can recognize a novel as a book that tells a fictional story. Not many people know about comic books, graphic novels and manga. There is a difference between these picture books. Comic books were traditionally staple bound, but during the recent resurgence they were hardbound to better endure wear and tear. Comics center themselves around the misadventures of its protagonist. Graphic novels focus more on telling a single story. Graphic novels are bound like paperback books. Manga is originally the Japanese version of comics. Manga can be viewed as a cross between comics and graphic novels. It most often consists of a groupââ¬â¢s misadventures on the way to achieving a goal. Manga is also bound as a paperback, and its most distinct attribute is the book reads right to left instead of left to right. Chapter Fifteen Bloodmoss On, said the alethiometer. Farther, higher. So on they climbed. We will write a custom essay sample on The Subtle Knife Chapter Fifteen or any similar topic only for you Order Now The witches flew above to spy out the best routes, because the hilly land soon gave way to steeper slopes and rocky footing, and as the sun rose toward noon, the travelers found themselves in a tangled land of dry gullies, cliffs, and boulder-strewn valleys where not a single green leaf grew, and where the stridulation of insects was the only sound. They moved on, stopping only for sips of water from their goatskin flasks, and talking little. Pantalaimon flew above Lyraââ¬â¢s head for a while until he tired of that, and then he became a little sure-footed mountain sheep, vain of his horns, leaping among rocks while Lyra scrambled laboriously alongside. Will moved on grimly, screwing up his eyes against the glare, ignoring the worsening pain from his hand, and finally reaching a state in which movement alone was good and stillness bad, so that he suffered more from resting than from toiling on. And since the failure of the witchesââ¬â¢ spell to stop his bleeding, he thought they were regarding him with fear, too, as if he was marked by some curse greater than their own powers. At one point they came to a little lake, a patch of intense blue scarcely thirty yards across among the red rocks. They stopped there to drink and refill their flasks, and to soak their aching feet in the icy water. They stayed a few minutes and moved on, and soon afterward, when the sun was at its highest and hottest, Serafina Pekkala darted down to speak to them. She was agitated. ââ¬Å"I must leave you for a while,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Lee Scoresby needs me. I donââ¬â¢t know why. But he wouldnââ¬â¢t call if he didnââ¬â¢t need my help. Keep going, and Iââ¬â¢ll find you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Mr. Scoresby?â⬠said Lyra, excited and anxious. ââ¬Å"But where ââ¬â ââ¬Å" But Serafina was gone, speeding out of sight before Lyra could finish the question. Lyra reached automatically for the alethiometer to ask what had happened to Lee Scoresby, but she let her hand drop, because sheââ¬â¢d promised to do no more than guide Will. She looked across to him. He was sitting nearby, his hand held loosely on his knee and still slowly dripping blood, his face scorched by the sun and pale under the burning. ââ¬Å"Will,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"dââ¬â¢you know why you have to find your father?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s what Iââ¬â¢ve always known. My mother said Iââ¬â¢d take up my fatherââ¬â¢s mantle. Thatââ¬â¢s all I know.â⬠ââ¬Å"What does that mean, taking up his mantle? Whatââ¬â¢s a mantle?â⬠ââ¬Å"A task, I suppose. Whatever heââ¬â¢s been doing, Iââ¬â¢ve got to carry on. It makes as much sense as anything else.â⬠He wiped the sweat out of his eyes with his right hand. What he couldnââ¬â¢t say was that he longed for his father as a lost child yearns for home. That comparison wouldnââ¬â¢t have occurred to him, because home was the place he kept safe for his mother, not the place others kept safe for him. But it had been five years now since that Saturday morning in the supermarket when the pretend game of hiding from the enemies became desperately real, such a long time in his life, and his heart craved to hear the words ââ¬Å"Well done, well done, my child; no one on earth could have done better; Iââ¬â¢m proud of you. Come and rest nowâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Will longed for that so much that he hardly knew he did. It was just part of what everything felt like. So he couldnââ¬â¢t express that to Lyra now, though she could see it in his eyes, and that was new for her, too, to be quite so perceptive. The fact was that where Will was concerned, she was developing a new kind of sense, as if he were simply more in focus than anyone sheââ¬â¢d known before. Everything about him was clear and close and immediate. And she might have said that to him, but at that moment a witch flew down. ââ¬Å"I can see people behind us,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re a long way back, but theyââ¬â¢re moving quickly. Shall I go closer and look?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, do,â⬠said Lyra, ââ¬Å"but fly low, and hide, and donââ¬â¢t let them see you.â⬠Will and Lyra got painfully to their feet again and clambered on. ââ¬Å"I been cold plenty of times,â⬠Lyra said, to take her mind off the pursuers, ââ¬Å"but I enââ¬â¢t been this hot, ever. Is it this hot in your world?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not where I used to live. Not normally. But the climateââ¬â¢s been changing. The summers are hotter than they used to be. They say that people have been interfering with the atmosphere by putting chemicals in it, and the weatherââ¬â¢s going out of control.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, they have,â⬠said Lyra, ââ¬Å"and it is. And weââ¬â¢re here in the middle of it.â⬠He was too hot and thirsty to reply, and they climbed on breathlessly in the throbbing air. Pantalaimon was a cricket now, and sat on Lyraââ¬â¢s shoulder, too tired to leap or fly. From time to time the witches would see a spring high up, too high to climb to, and fly up to fill the childrenââ¬â¢s flasks. They would soon have died without water, and there was none where they were; any spring that made its way into the air was soon swallowed again among the rocks. And so they moved on, toward evening. The witch who flew back to spy was called Lena Feldt. She flew low, from crag to crag, and as the sun was setting and drawing a wild blood-red out of the rocks, she came to the little blue lake and found a troop of soldiers making camp. But her first glimpse of them told her more than she wanted to know; these soldiers had no daemons. And they werenââ¬â¢t from Willââ¬â¢s world, or the world of Cittagazze, where peopleââ¬â¢s daemons were inside them, and where they still looked alive; these men were from her own world, and to see them without daemons was a gross and sickening horror. You read "The Subtle Knife Chapter Fifteen" in category "Essay examples" Then out of a tent by the lakeside came the explanation. Lena Feldt saw a woman, a short-life, graceful in her khaki hunting clothes and as full of life as the golden monkey who capered along the waterââ¬â¢s edge beside her. Lena Feldt hid among the rocks above and watched as Mrs. Coulter spoke to the officer in charge, and as his men put up tents, made fires, boiled water. The witch had been among Serafina Pekkalaââ¬â¢s troop who rescued the children at Bolvangar, and she longed to shoot Mrs. Coulter on the spot; but some fortune was protecting the woman, for it was just too far for a bowshot from where she was, and the witch could get no closer without making herself invisible. So she began to make the spell. It took ten minutes of deep concentration. Confident at last, Lena Feldt went down the rocky slope toward the lake, and as she walked through the camp, one or two blank-eyed soldiers glanced up briefly, but found what they saw too hard to remember, and looked away again. The witch stopped outside the tent Mrs. Coulter had gone into, and fitted an arrow to her bowstring. She listened to the low voice through the canvas and then moved carefully to the open flap that overlooked the lake. Inside the tent Mrs. Coulter was talking to a man Lena Feldt hadnââ¬â¢t seen before: an older man, gray-haired and powerful, with a serpent daemon twined around his wrist. He was sitting in a canvas chair beside hers, and she was leaning toward him, speaking softly. ââ¬Å"Of course, Carlo,â⬠she was saying, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll tell you anything you like. What do you want to know?â⬠ââ¬Å"How do you command the Specters?â⬠the man said. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t think it possible, but you have them following you like dogsâ⬠¦ Are they afraid of your bodyguard? What is it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Simple,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"They know I can give them more nourishment if they let me live than if they consume me. I can lead them to all the victims their phantom hearts desire. As soon as you described them to me, I knew I could dominate them, and so it turns out. And a whole world trembles in the power of these pallid things! But, Carlo,â⬠she whispered, ââ¬Å"I can please you, too, you know. Would you like me to please you even more?â⬠ââ¬Å"Marisa,â⬠he murmured, ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s enough of a pleasure to be close to youâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"No, it isnââ¬â¢t, Carlo; you know it isnââ¬â¢t. You know I can please you more than this.â⬠Her daemonââ¬â¢s little black horny hands were stroking the serpent daemon. Little by little the serpent loosened herself and began to flow along the manââ¬â¢s arm toward the monkey. Both the man and the woman were holding glasses of golden wine, and she sipped hers and leaned a little closer to him. ââ¬Å"Ah,â⬠said the man as the daemon slipped slowly off his arm and let her weight into the golden monkeyââ¬â¢s hands. The monkey raised her slowly to his face and ran his cheek softly along her emerald skin. Her tongue flicked blackly this way and that, and the man sighed. ââ¬Å"Carlo, tell me why youââ¬â¢re pursuing the boy,â⬠Mrs. Coulter whispered, and her voice was as soft as the monkeyââ¬â¢s caress. ââ¬Å"Why do you need to find him?â⬠ââ¬Å"He has something I want. Oh, Marisa ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"What is it, Carlo? Whatââ¬â¢s he got?â⬠He shook his head. But he was finding it hard to resist; his daemon was twined gently around the monkeyââ¬â¢s breast, and running her head through and through the long, lustrous fur as his hands moved along her fluid length. Lena Feldt watched them, standing invisible just two paces from where they sat. Her bowstring was taut, the arrow nocked to it in readiness; she could have pulled and loosed in less than a second, and Mrs. Coulter would have been dead before she finished drawing breath. But the witch was curious. She stood still and silent and wide-eyed. But while she was watching Mrs. Coulter, she didnââ¬â¢t look behind her across the little blue lake. On the far side of it in the darkness a grove of ghostly trees seemed to have planted itself, a grove that shivered every so often with a tremor like a conscious intention. But they were not trees, of course; and while all the curiosity of Lena Feldt and her daemon was directed at Mrs. Coulter, one of the pallid forms detached itself from its fellows and drifted across the surface of the icy water, causing not a single ripple, until it paused a foot from the rock on which Lena Feldtââ¬â¢s daemon was perched. ââ¬Å"You could easily tell me, Carlo,â⬠Mrs. Coulter was murmuring. ââ¬Å"You could whisper it. You could pretend to be talking in your sleep, and who could blame you for that? Just tell me what the boy has, and why you want it. I could get it for youâ⬠¦ Wouldnââ¬â¢t you like me to do that? Just tell me, Carlo. I donââ¬â¢t want it. I want the girl. What is it? Just tell me, and you shall have it.â⬠He gave a soft shudder. His eyes were closed. Then he said, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a knife. The subtle knife of Cittagazze. You havenââ¬â¢t heard of it, Marisa? Some people call it teleutaia makhaira, the last knife of all. Others call it Aesahaettr.â⬠ââ¬Å"What does it do, Carlo? Why is it special?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ahâ⬠¦ Itââ¬â¢s the knife that will cut anything. Not even its makers knew what it could do. Nothing, no one, matter, spirit, angel, air ââ¬â nothing is invulnerable to the subtle knife. Marisa, itââ¬â¢s mine, you understand?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course, Carlo. I promise. Let me fill your glassâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ And as the golden monkey slowly ran his hands along the emerald serpent again and again, squeezing just a little, lifting, stroking as Sir Charles sighed with pleasure, Lena Feldt saw what was truly happening: because while the manââ¬â¢s eyes were closed, Mrs. Coulter secretly tilted a few drops from a small flask into the glass before filling it again with wine. ââ¬Å"Here, darling,â⬠she whispered. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s drink, to each otherâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He was already intoxicated. He took the glass and sipped greedily, once, again, and again. And then, without any warning, Mrs. Coulter stood up and turned and looked Lena Feldt full in the face. ââ¬Å"Well, witch,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"did you think I donââ¬â¢t know how you make yourself invisible?â⬠Lena Feldt was too surprised to move. Behind her, the man was struggling to breathe. His chest was heaving, his face was red, and his daemon was limp and fainting in the monkeyââ¬â¢s hands. The monkey shook her off in contempt. Lena Feldt tried to swing her bow up, but a fatal paralysis had touched her shoulder. She couldnââ¬â¢t make herself do it. This had never happened before, and she uttered a little cry. ââ¬Å"Oh, itââ¬â¢s too late for that,â⬠said Mrs. Coulter. ââ¬Å"Look at the lake, witch.â⬠Lena Feldt turned and saw her snow bunting daemon fluttering and shrieking as if he were in a glass chamber that was being emptied of air; fluttering and falling, slumping, failing, his beak opening wide, gasping in panic. The Specter had enveloped him. ââ¬Å"No!â⬠she cried, and tried to move toward it, but was driven back by a spasm of nausea. Even in her sickened distress, Lena Feldt could see that Mrs. Coulter had more force in her soul than anyone she had ever seen. It didnââ¬â¢t surprise her to see that the Specter was under Mrs. Coulterââ¬â¢s power; no one could resist that authority. Lena Feldt turned back in anguish to the woman. ââ¬Å"Let him go! Please let him go!â⬠she cried. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll see. Is the child with you? The girl Lyra?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes!â⬠ââ¬Å"And a boy, too? A boy with a knife?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes ââ¬â I beg you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"And how many witches have you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Twenty! Let him go, let him go!â⬠ââ¬Å"All in the air? Or do some of you stay on the ground with the children?â⬠ââ¬Å"Most in the air, three or four on the ground always ââ¬â this is anguish ââ¬â let him go or kill me now!â⬠ââ¬Å"How far up the mountain are they? Are they moving on, or have they stopped to rest?â⬠Lena Feldt told her everything. She could have resisted any torture but what was happening to her daemon now. When Mrs. Coulter had learned all she wanted to know about where the witches were, and how they guarded Lyra and Will, she said, ââ¬Å"And now tell me this. You witches know something about the child Lyra. I nearly learned it from one of your sisters, but she died before I could complete the torture. Well, there is no one to save you now. Tell me the truth about my daughter.â⬠Lena Feldt gasped, ââ¬Å"She will be the mother ââ¬â she will be life-mother ââ¬â she will disobey ââ¬â she will ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Name her! You are saying everything but the most important thing! Name her!â⬠cried Mrs. Coulter. ââ¬Å"Eve! Mother of all! Eve, again! Mother Eve!â⬠stammered Lena Feldt, sobbing. ââ¬Å"Ah,â⬠said Mrs. Coulter. And she breathed a great sigh, as if the purpose of her life was clear to her at last. Dimly the witch saw what she had done, and through the horror that was enveloping her she tried to cry out: ââ¬Å"What will you do to her? What will you do?â⬠ââ¬Å"Why, I shall have to destroy her,â⬠said Mrs. Coulter, ââ¬Å"to prevent another Fallâ⬠¦ Why didnââ¬â¢t I see this before? It was too large to seeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She clapped her hands together softly, like a child, wide-eyed. Lena Feldt, whimpering, heard her go on: ââ¬Å"Of course. Asriel will make war on the Authority, and thenâ⬠¦ Of course, of course. As before, so again. And Lyra is Eve. And this time she will not fall. Iââ¬â¢ll see to that.â⬠And Mrs. Coulter drew herself up, and snapped her fingers to the Specter feeding on the witchââ¬â¢s daemon. The little snow bunting daemon lay twitching on the rock as the Specter moved toward the witch herself, and then whatever Lena Feldt had undergone before was doubled and trebled and multiplied a hundredfold. She felt a nausea of the soul, a hideous and sickening despair, a melancholy weariness so profound that she was going to die of it. Her last conscious thought was disgust at life; her senses had lied to her. The world was not made of energy and delight but of foulness, betrayal, and lassitude. Living was hateful, and death was no better, and from end to end of the universe this was the first and last and only truth. Thus she stood, bow in hand, indifferent, dead in life. So Lena Feldt failed to see or to care about what Mrs. Coulter did next. Ignoring the gray-haired man slumped unconscious in the canvas chair and his dull-skinned daemon coiled in the dust, the woman called the captain of the soldiers and ordered them to get ready for a night march up the mountain. Then she went to the edge of the water and called to the Specters. They came at her command, gliding like pillars of mist across the water. She raised her arms and made them forget they were earthbound, so that one by one they rose into the air and floated free like malignant thistledown, drifting up into the night and borne by the air currents toward Will and Lyra and the other witches; but Lena Feldt saw nothing of it. The temperature dropped quickly after dark, and when Will and Lyra had eaten the last of their dry bread, they lay down under an overhanging rock to keep warm and try to sleep. At least Lyra didnââ¬â¢t have to try; she was unconscious in less than a minute, curled tightly around Pantalaimon, but Will couldnââ¬â¢t find sleep, no matter how long he lay there. It was partly his hand, which was now throbbing right up to the elbow and uncomfortably swollen, and partly the hard ground, and partly the cold, and partly utter exhaustion, and partly his longing for his mother. He was afraid for her, of course, and he knew sheââ¬â¢d be safer if he was there to look after her; but he wanted her to look after him, too, as sheââ¬â¢d done when he was very small. He wanted her to bandage him and tuck him into bed and sing to him and take away all the trouble and surround him with all the warmth and softness and mother-kindness he needed so badly; and it was never going to happen. Part of him was only a little boy still. So he cried, but he lay very still as he did, not wanting to wake Lyra. But he still wasnââ¬â¢t asleep. He was more awake than ever. Finally he uncurled his stiff limbs and got up quietly, shivering; and with the knife at his waist he set off higher up the mountain, to calm his restlessness. Behind him the sentry witchââ¬â¢s robin daemon cocked his head, and she turned from the watch she was keeping to see Will clambering up the rocks. She reached for her pine branch and silently took to the air, not to disturb him but to see that he came to no harm. He didnââ¬â¢t notice. He felt such a need to move and keep moving that he hardly noticed the pain in his hand anymore. He felt as if he should walk all night, all day, forever, because nothing else would calm this fever in his breast. And as if in sympathy with him, a wind was rising. There were no leaves to stir in this wilderness, but the air buffeted his body and made his hair stream away from his face; it was wild outside him and wild within. He climbed higher and higher, hardly once thinking of how he might find his way back down to Lyra, until he came out on a little plateau almost at the top of the world, it seemed. All around him, on every horizon, the mountains reached no higher. In the brilliant glare of the moon the only colors were stark black and dead white, and every edge was jagged and every surface bare. The wild wind must have been bringing clouds overhead, because suddenly the moon was covered, and darkness swept over the whole landscape ââ¬â thick clouds, too, for no gleam of moonlight shone through them. In less than a minute Will found himself in nearly total darkness. And at the same moment Will felt a grip on his right arm. He cried out with shock and twisted away at once, but the grip was tenacious. And Will was savage now. He felt he was at the very end of everything; and if it was the end of his life, too, he was going to fight and fight till he fell. So he twisted and kicked and twisted again, but that hand wouldnââ¬â¢t let go; and since it was his right arm being held, he couldnââ¬â¢t get at the knife. He tried with his left, but he was being jerked around so much, and his hand was so painful and swollen, that he couldnââ¬â¢t reach; he had to fight with one bare, wounded hand against a grown man. He sank his teeth into the hand on his forearm, but all that happened was that the man landed a dizzying blow on the back of his head. Then Will kicked again and again, and some of the kicks connected and some didnââ¬â¢t, and all the time he was pulling, jerking, twisting, shoving, and still the grip held him fast. Dimly he heard his own panting and the manââ¬â¢s grunts and harsh breathing; and then by chance he got his leg behind the manââ¬â¢s and hurled himself against his chest, and the man fell with Will on top of him, heavily. But never for a moment did that grip slacken, and Will, rolling around violently on the stony ground, felt a heavy fear tighten around his heart: this man would never let him go, and even if he killed him, his corpse would still be holding fast. But Will was weakening, and now he was crying, too, sobbing bitterly as he kicked and tugged and beat at the man with his head and feet, and he knew his muscles would give up soon. And then he noticed that the man had fallen still, though his hand still gripped as tight as ever. He was lying there letting Will batter at him with knees and head; and as soon as Will saw that, the last of his strength left him, and he fell helpless beside his opponent, every nerve in his body ringing and dizzy and throbbing. Will hauled himself up painfully, peered through the deep darkness, and made out a blur of white on the ground beside the man. It was the white breast and head of a great bird, an osprey, a daemon, and it was lying still. Will tried to pull away, and his feeble tug woke a response from the man, whose hand hadnââ¬â¢t loosened. But he was moving. He was feeling Willââ¬â¢s right hand carefully with his free one. Willââ¬â¢s hair stood on end. Then the man said, ââ¬Å"Give me your other hand.â⬠ââ¬Å"Be careful,â⬠said Will. The manââ¬â¢s free hand felt down Willââ¬â¢s left arm, and his fingertips moved gently over the wrist and on to the swollen palm and with the utmost delicacy on to the stumps of Willââ¬â¢s two lost fingers. His other hand let go at once, and he sat up. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got the knife,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the knife bearer.â⬠His voice was resonant, harsh, but breathless. Will sensed that he was badly hurt. Had he wounded this dark opponent? Will was still lying on the stones, utterly spent. All he could see was the manââ¬â¢s shape, crouching above him, but he couldnââ¬â¢t see his face. The man was reaching sideways for something, and after a few moments a marvelous soothing coolness spread into his hand from the stumps of his fingers as the man massaged a salve into his skin. ââ¬Å"What are you doing?â⬠Will said. ââ¬Å"Curing your wound. Keep still.â⬠ââ¬Å"Who are you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m the only man who knows what the knife is for. Hold your hand up like that. Donââ¬â¢t move.â⬠The wind was beating more wildly than ever, and a drop or two of rain splashed onto Willââ¬â¢s face. He was trembling violently, but he propped up his left hand with his right while the man spread more ointment over the stumps and wound a strip of linen tightly around the hand. And as soon as the dressing was secure, the man slumped sideways and lay down himself. Will, still bemused by the blessed cool numbness in his hand, tried to sit up and look at him. But it was darker than ever. He felt forward with his right hand and found himself touching the manââ¬â¢s chest, where the heart was beating like a bird against the bars of a cage. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠the man said hoarsely. ââ¬Å"Try and cure that, go on.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you ill?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll be better soon. You have the knife, yes?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you know how to use it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, yes. But are you from this world? How do you know about it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Listen,â⬠said the man, sitting up with a struggle. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t interrupt. If youââ¬â¢re the bearer of the knife, you have a task thatââ¬â¢s greater than you can imagine. A childâ⬠¦ How could they let it happen? Well, so it must beâ⬠¦ There is a war coming, boy. The greatest war there ever was. Something like it happened before, and this time the right side must win. Weââ¬â¢ve had nothing but lies and propaganda and cruelty and deceit for all the thousands of years of human history. Itââ¬â¢s time we started again, but properly this timeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He stopped to take in several rattling breaths. ââ¬Å"The knife,â⬠he went on after a minute. ââ¬Å"They never knew what they were making, those old philosophers. They invented a device that could split open the very smallest particles of matter, and they used it to steal candy. They had no idea that theyââ¬â¢d made the one weapon in all the universes that could defeat the tyrant. The Authority. God. The rebel angels fell because they didnââ¬â¢t have anything like the knife; but nowâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t want it! I donââ¬â¢t want it now!â⬠Will cried. ââ¬Å"If you want it, you can have it! I hate it, and I hate what it does ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Too late. You havenââ¬â¢t any choice: youââ¬â¢re the bearer. Itââ¬â¢s picked you out. And, whatââ¬â¢s more, they know youââ¬â¢ve got it; and if you donââ¬â¢t use it against them, theyââ¬â¢ll tear it from your hands and use it against the rest of us, forever and ever.â⬠ââ¬Å"But why should I fight them? Iââ¬â¢ve been fighting too much; I canââ¬â¢t go on fighting. I want to ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Have you won your fights?â⬠Will was silent. Then he said, ââ¬Å"Yes, I suppose.â⬠ââ¬Å"You fought for the knife?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, but ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Then youââ¬â¢re a warrior. Thatââ¬â¢s what you are. Argue with anything else, but donââ¬â¢t argue with your own nature.â⬠Will knew that the man was speaking the truth. But it wasnââ¬â¢t a welcome truth. It was heavy and painful. The man seemed to know that, because he let Will bow his head before he spoke again. ââ¬Å"There are two great powers,â⬠the man said, ââ¬Å"and theyââ¬â¢ve been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit.â⬠ââ¬Å"And now those two powers are lining up for battle. And each of them wants that knife of yours more than anything else. You have to choose, boy. Weââ¬â¢ve been guided here, both of us ââ¬â you with the knife, and me to tell you about it.â⬠ââ¬Å"No! Youââ¬â¢re wrong!â⬠cried Will. ââ¬Å"I wasnââ¬â¢t looking for anything like that! Thatââ¬â¢s not what I was looking for at all!â⬠ââ¬Å"You might not think so, but thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ve found,â⬠said the man in the darkness. ââ¬Å"But what must I do?â⬠And then Stanislaus Grumman, Jopari, John Parry hesitated. He was painfully aware of the oath heââ¬â¢d sworn to Lee Scoresby, and he hesitated before he broke it; but break it he did. ââ¬Å"You must go to Lord Asriel,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"and tell him that Stanislaus Grumman sent you, and that you have the one weapon he needs above all others. Like it or not, boy, you have a job to do. Ignore everything else, no matter how important it seems, and go and do this. Someone will appear to guide you; the night is full of angels. Your wound will heal now?C Wait. Before you go, I want to look at you properly.â⬠He felt for the pack heââ¬â¢d been carrying and took something out, unfolding layers of oilskin and then striking a match to light a little tin lantern. In its light, through the rain-dashed windy air, the two looked at each other. Will saw blazing blue eyes in a haggard face with several daysââ¬â¢ growth of beard on the stubborn jaw, gray-haired, drawn with pain, a thin body hunched in a heavy cloak trimmed with feathers. The shaman saw a boy even younger than heââ¬â¢d thought, his slim body shivering in a torn linen shirt and his expression exhausted and savage and wary, but alight with a wild curiosity, his eyes wide under the straight black brows, so like his motherââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦ And there came just the first flicker of something else to both of them. But in that same moment, as the lantern light flared over John Parryââ¬â¢s face, something shot down from the turbid sky, and he fell back dead before he could say a word, an arrow in his failing heart. The osprey daemon vanished in a moment. Will could only sit stupefied. A flicker crossed the corner of his vision, and his right hand darted up at once, and he found he was clutching a robin, a daemon, red-breasted, panicking. ââ¬Å"No! No!â⬠cried the witch Juta Kamainen, and fell down after him, clutching at her own heart, crashing clumsily into the rocky ground and struggling up again. But Will was there before she could find her feet, and the subtle knife was at her throat. ââ¬Å"Why did you do that?â⬠he shouted. ââ¬Å"Why did you kill him?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because I loved him and he scorned me! I am a witch! I donââ¬â¢t forgive!â⬠And because she was a witch she wouldnââ¬â¢t have been afraid of a boy, normally. But she was afraid of Will. This young wounded figure held more force and danger than sheââ¬â¢d ever met in a human before, and she quailed. She fell backward, and he followed and gripped her hair with his left hand, feeling no pain, feeling only an immense and shattering despair. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t know who he was,â⬠he cried. ââ¬Å"He was my father!â⬠She shook her head and whispered, ââ¬Å"No. No! That canââ¬â¢t be true. Impossible!â⬠ââ¬Å"You think things have to be possible? Things have to be true! He was my father, and neither of us knew it till the second you killed him! Witch, I wait all my life and come all this way and I find him at last, and you kill himâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ And he shook her head like a rag and threw her back against the ground, half-stunning her. Her astonishment was almost greater than her fear of him, which was real enough, and she pulled herself up, dazed, and seized his shirt in supplication. He knocked her hand away. ââ¬Å"What did he ever do that you needed to kill him?â⬠he cried. ââ¬Å"Tell me that, if you can!â⬠And she looked at the dead man. Then she looked back at Will and shook her head sadly. ââ¬Å"No, I canââ¬â¢t explain,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re too young. It wouldnââ¬â¢t make sense to you. I loved him. Thatââ¬â¢s all. Thatââ¬â¢s enough.â⬠And before Will could stop her, she fell softly sideways, her hand on the hilt of the knife she had just taken from her own belt and pushed between her ribs. Will felt no horror, only desolation and bafflement. He stood up slowly and looked down at the dead witch, at her rich black hair, her flushed cheeks, her smooth pale limbs wet with rain, her lips parted like a loverââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t understand,â⬠he said aloud. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s too strange.â⬠Will turned back to the dead man, his father. A thousand things jostled at his throat, and only the dashing rain cooled the hotness in his eyes. The little lantern still flickered and flared as the draft through the ill-fitting window licked around the flame, and by its light Will knelt and put his hands on the manââ¬â¢s body, touching his face, his shoulders, his chest, closing his eyes, pushing the wet gray hair off his forehead, pressing his hands to the rough cheeks, closing his fatherââ¬â¢s mouth, squeezing his hands. ââ¬Å"Father,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"Dad, Daddyâ⬠¦ Fatherâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t understand why she did that. Itââ¬â¢s too strange for me. But whatever you wanted me to do, I promise, I swear Iââ¬â¢ll do it. Iââ¬â¢ll fight. Iââ¬â¢ll be a warrior. I will. This knife, Iââ¬â¢ll take it to Lord Asriel, wherever he is, and Iââ¬â¢ll help him fight that enemy. Iââ¬â¢ll do it. You can rest now. Itââ¬â¢s all right. You can sleep now.â⬠Beside the dead man lay his deerskin pack with the oilskin and the lantern and the little horn box of bloodmoss ointment. Will picked them up, and then he noticed his fatherââ¬â¢s feather-trimmed cloak trailing behind his body on the ground, heavy and sodden but warm. His father had no more use for it, and Will was shaking with cold. He unfastened the bronze buckle at the dead manââ¬â¢s throat and swung the canvas pack over his shoulder before wrapping the cloak around himself. He blew out the lantern and looked back at the dim shapes of his father, of the witch, of his father again before turning to go down the mountain. The stormy air was electric with whispers, and in the tearing of the wind Will could hear other sounds, too: confused echoes of cries and chanting, the clash of metal on metal, pounding wingbeats that one moment sounded so close they might actually be inside his head, and the next so far away they might have been on another planet. The rocks underfoot were slippery and loose, and it was much harder going down than it had been climbing up; but he didnââ¬â¢t falter. And as he turned down the last little gully before the place where heââ¬â¢d left Lyra sleeping, he stopped suddenly. He could see two figures simply standing there, in the dark, waiting. Will put his hand on the knife. Then one of the figures spoke. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the boy with the knife?â⬠he said, and his voice had the strange quality of those wingbeats. Whoever he was, he wasnââ¬â¢t a human being. ââ¬Å"Who are you?â⬠Will said. ââ¬Å"Are you men, or ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Not men, no. We are Watchers. Bene elim. In your language, angels.â⬠Will was silent. The speaker went on: ââ¬Å"Other angels have other functions, and other powers. Our task is simple: We need you. We have been following the shaman every inch of his way, hoping he would lead us to you, and so he has. And now we have come to guide you in turn to Lord Asriel.â⬠ââ¬Å"You were with my father all the time?â⬠ââ¬Å"Every moment.â⬠ââ¬Å"Did he know?â⬠ââ¬Å"He had no idea.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why didnââ¬â¢t you stop the witch, then? Why did you let her kill him?â⬠ââ¬Å"We would have done, earlier. But his task was over once heââ¬â¢d led us to you.â⬠Will said nothing. His head was ringing; this was no less difficult to understand than anything else. ââ¬Å"All right,â⬠he said finally. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll come with you. But first I must wake Lyra.â⬠They stood aside to let him pass, and he felt a tingle in the air as he went close to them, but he ignored it and concentrated on getting down the slope toward the little shelter where Lyra was sleeping. But something made him stop. In the dimness, he could see the witches who had been guarding Lyra all sitting or standing still. They looked like statues, except that they were breathing, but they were scarcely alive. There were several black-silk-clad bodies on the ground, too, and as he gazed in horror from one to another of them, Will saw what must have happened: they had been attacked in midair by the Specters, and had fallen to their deaths, indifferently. But ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s Lyra?â⬠he cried aloud. The hollow under the rock was empty. Lyra was gone. There was something under the overhang where sheââ¬â¢d been lying. It was Lyraââ¬â¢s little canvas rucksack, and from the weight of it he knew without looking that the alethiometer was still inside it. Will was shaking his head. It couldnââ¬â¢t be true, but it was: Lyra was gone, Lyra was captured, Lyra was lost. The two dark figures of the bene elim had not moved. But they spoke: ââ¬Å"You must come with us now. Lord Asriel needs you at once. The enemyââ¬â¢s power is growing every minute. The shaman has told you what your task is. Follow us and help us win. Come with us. Come this way. Come now.â⬠And Will looked from them to Lyraââ¬â¢s rucksack and back again, and he didnââ¬â¢t hear a word they said. Responsive reader questions 1-3. What would you include in capsule portraits or thumbnail sketches of the women inmates Coyne describes in her article? What kind of people are they?Included in a capsule filled with the portraits or thumbnail sketches of the women inmates, Coyne describes in her article, at Federal Prison Camp for women in Pekin, Illinois would be many personal items. One thing would be certain is that the Mothers Day flower given to the mothers would be included in the capsule. Next the dress made by the inmates would be included for two reasons. The first reason is to show that the inmates did not have to be in prison uniforms for Mothers Day and second to show how important Mothers Day is to the inmates. The clothing they wear symbolizes their excitement about Mothers Day and the hard work the inmates put into the preparation of the important day. A good portion of the inmates in the minimum-security prison are normal women that were either in the wrong place at the wrong time or made a mistake in life. Yet when they are with their families on Mothers Day it looks seems to be as if the prison doesnt truly exist, do to the amount of joy filling the visiting room. Is there a common element or common denominator in the histories of the inmates? Is there anything to be learned from their stories? The common element that happens to be in the histories of the inmates is that they are not hard core criminals. If anything most of them are innocent, and only guilty of helping a love one with no idea of what was happening. In fact the main thing said by the families of the inmates is why should my love one be in here when there are worse criminals in the world. From all of this one can learn that no matter how well you know someone always ask why. If half of the women in this article just asked why they more or likely would not be in the position they happen to be in their present state. In what ways is the jail Coyne visited a womans world? Which of the scenes or details Coyne records do you think would be missing or different in the visiting room of a prison for men?The jail Coyne visited is a womans world do mainly to the fact that it is a woman facility. For instance if one was ever to visit a prison for men on fathers day the men would not be getting flowers, nor would they be taking their kids in their arms and smelling every body part they own. Also it is very unlikely that the men would be stylish in their clothing due to the fact they more or likely dont know how to create clothing. TIME Responsive Reader questions 1-3Can you empathize with the author of this account of prison life? Why or why not? What kind of person is he? How did the prison experience affect him? How did it shape his attitude toward life?If you were ever in a bank that was being robbed while you were there 99.9% of your emotions would be that of fear. In that same sense one can not empathize for the author of this account of prison life. Because of his wrong doing he has scared people for life about the idea of ever entering a bank again. He had done a crime in which he got caught and had to do the time. He seems to be a very kind and intelligent person, yet maybe a little to immature and one that is more of a follower than a leader. Other wise he would have set an example with Tony and brushed him off. This time in prison affect and shaped his attitude toward life. First he had a lot of emotional things to deal with. One was about the fact that his lady left him for another man. That of all must be the worst thing one must go through while in jail. Yet in another sense he created a greater connection between himself and God. While in jail he was able to increase his knowledge in the literary would and also in the spiritual world. .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c , .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .postImageUrl , .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c , .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:hover , .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:visited , .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:active { border:0!important; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:active , .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u578196ac2a3a8d53b329533d1d0ec26c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Trail Of Tears EssayHow do the different inmates McCall remembers deal with doing time? How do they cope? What strategies do they develop, and how successful are these? From what McCall said it seems that all the inmates or a good portion of the inmates deal with their time through emotions. Some of the men just sit there and take it but others try and kill them selves because its to hard. Yet a good portion of the inmates deal with it through anger and taking it out on other people. Really none of them cope with the time, they have really no choice but to do it, and thats what in angers them. Some of the things they do, are keep journals, play chess, work out and other stuff. Yet like all things you can only do it for so long till it gets boarding so most of the strategies they develop are not all that successful. Many stories of prison life focus on trying to survive in a brutally violent environment. For the author, what is the point of the story he tells about his confrontation with Tony? What is the point or the lesson of the story for you?The point of the story McCall tells about his confrontation with Tony describes how hard prison life is. In the real world he might never have actually threaten Tonys life, yet in prison you can not be seen as a week individual. In prison week individuals are the ones that get taken advantage of in more than one way. The reason for this is that the inmates know that no matter what they do to this person they wont retaliate. The story points out that under any circumstance of prison life and no matter how much you say you wont become like the other prisoners you always will. After the Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General stated that cigarettes cause lung cancer there was a tremendous movement to make cigarettes illegal. Now the debate is on environmental tobacco smoke also known as secondhand smoke, passive smoking, and sidestream smoke. The worry is that when non-smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke they face the same health hazards as smokers. Tobacco smoke contains more than forty known carcinogens. Sidestream smoke carries these carcinogens into the air (Sussman 12). According to scientific studies tobacco smoke contains four thousand chemicals, and at least sixty are known to cause cancer. Carbon monoxide is the main gas in cigarette smoke. This gas competes with oxygen for binding sites on red blood cells, and results in depleting the body of oxygen (QA). Researchers studied 1,906 women of which 653 developed lung cancer. Women married to smokers were thirty percent more likely to develop lung cancer than those married to non-smokers (LeMaistre 1). We will write a custom essay on Tobacco specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now According to the Environmental Protection Agency a thirty percent risk is only a small relative risk. The Environmental Protection Agency released its report stating that environmental tobacco smoke is a human lung carcinogen, responsible for approximately three thousand lung cancer deaths annually in American non-smokers. Environmental tobacco smoke has been classified as a Group A carcinogen, the highest ranking under the EPAs carcinogen assessment guidelines. On the other hand, I will be supporting the negative that the non-identity argument is sufficient and a valid justification as to why black people do not deserve reparation. They do not deserve reparation on the basis that black people are better off in America than they would have been in their African counterpart had America not participated in the slave trade. I will also be describing why the non-identity problem poses a problem for the compensation argument. To put the non-identity problem, in regards to compensation, in my own words, I would first point out that there is no concrete definition to explain who would be receiving benefits from an entity, and going a little further, who would be dealing out this compensation to a specific set of people. Even though this problem of non-identity within the black race is quite a task to distinguish amongst many philosophers, the non-identity problem can be as simple as; should decedents of slaves in America receive compensation, whether it is financial, higher education opportunities, or certain rights that the normal population does not receive. This is basically one of the reasons why tying Non-Identity to compensation is such a daunting task and makes is very difficult. When trying to establish that slavery was actually a bad thing that happened to black people, we could try to put a value on their lives, now, compared to what quality of life they would have had if they had been left alone in Africa. I do believe that the people that were directly affected by slavery (actual slaves and their children) should receive some type of compensation because their lives were intensely changed for the worse as they were forced to work for free and live in harsh... Regarding health facilities, the company did not provide him with sick pay, and in case of absence due to ill health, he had to substitute himself with one of the companyââ¬â¢s other trainers with prior permission from the company. The company did not entitle him to membership of the companyââ¬â¢s pension scheme and was responsible for paying his own taxes and National Insurance. However, one fine day Tom was shocked to receive the termination letter from the company ending the contract with the Unfit Ltd. stating his continuous poor performance as the reason. According to the United Kingdomââ¬â¢s Employment Rights Act, 1996, all employees are supposed to have an employment contract with their employer, either in written or oral. It is further clarified that there is an express contract between employee and employer in case of no written contract is created, which m akes Tom and his employer liable to the employment rights act and mandates both the parties to follow the rules and regulation specified in the law (www.direct.gov.uk). There are few points for consideration on behalf of Tom on the basis of which he can make a claim for unfair dismissal from Unfit Ltd. Notice Period According to Employment Rights Act 1996, Sec. ... diate effect without prior notice is the only point which has can be put before tribunal for claim (www.legislation.gov.uk) As the reason specified by the Unfit Ltd, gym club is the ââ¬Ëpersistent poor job performanceââ¬â¢, it is further clarified that even in the absence of written statements of terms and conditions of employment, an employee working for one month is liable to receive not less than one week of notice, unless dismissed for gross misconduct. The brief facts of the case does not mention the Tomââ¬â¢s period of employment and his date of ending the contract with Unfit Ltd. Tom has been employed for more than three years with the company, making him liable for receiving of termination notice from his employer for at least three weeks in advance, according to Sec 86 (1) (b) (www.legislation.gov.uk).. However, it has to be mentioned that termination in the contract is fair if the reason relates to the conduct of the employee under Sec. 98 (2) (b) which empowers th e employer to terminate the employee for its bad conduct or ââ¬Ëpoor job performanceââ¬â¢. Even though the company has the right to terminate employee under section 98 (2) (b), it is necessary to give prior notice to the employee informing and explaining the reasons for his termination, three weeks in advance as mentioned in Sec. 86 (1) (b) (www.legislation.gov.uk). Since the employer, Unfit Ltd, gym club has not given any advance notice before immediate termination; Tom has the right to make a claim for unfair dismissal before Employment Tribunal under Employment Rights (Dispute Resolution) Act 1998 (www.legislation.co.uk). Further an employee is entitled to ask for a written statement from the employer stating the reasons of termination which is governed under Employment Rights Act 1996 under Sec. 92 (1) Frank Howellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07423653539859340315noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1447124041342611485.post-21156692162618614202019-11-20T15:49:00.001-08:002019-11-20T15:49:05.370-08:00Schizophrenia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1Schizophrenia - Essay Example What sets the two forms of schizophrenia apart is that the person who is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia believes themselves to be wanted or hunted, usually by the voices that they hear in their head or the people that they believe they can see. They develop schizophrenia as well as paranoia. Schizophrenia affects at least one per cent of Americans, with the majority of them being teenagers or young adults. Schizophrenia is most common in people during their late adolescence until their mid-twenties if they are men and their late twenties if they are female. The chance of getting schizophrenia is equal between gender and ethnic groups. Schizophrenia is also a disease that can be passed down from someone who already has the disease, or has had it. This can be done genetically, or if someone, especially a child, is subjected for great lengths of time to someone who has schizophrenia. A person is more likely to get the disease themselves if they are related, even distantly, to someone who has already had it. As there is no real definable cause of schizophrenia, it is difficult to predict if somebody will get it. People are often misdiagnosed due to the lack of understanding that comes with schizophrenia; there have been many cases when someone has been diagnosed, come to later find out that it was something unrelated to schizophrenia. It is a very shaky disease to diagnose properly. With all types of schizophrenia, the majority of the symptoms remain the same. There are only one or two striking differences that set the different branches apart from each other. There are considered to be three branches of symptoms, which are positive, negative, and cognitive. Positive symptoms are considered to be the obvious behaviors that are not normal to a healthy person. These symptoms are easy to spot and are easiest to treat. Positive symptoms include unusual thoughts, hallucinations, and delusions. No event takes place in an isolated way, defeating the very purpose of the event. The event has direct or indirect influence on every aspect of our lives and these include social, cultural, economic, environmental or political aspects (Allen et al., 2002). The payback from an event is enormous. A lot of constructive and encouraging associations are formed during the event. This is one of the most important reasons for the attractiveness and fame of an event (Bowdin et al., 2006). It is inevitable to measure the various impacts of an event, thus ensuring the proper monitoring, control and evaluation. Recent literatures have revealed an interesting fact, that the methods used to measure the event, and also the aspects measured differ significantly (Wood, E.H., 2005). Primarily, constructive social, cultural as well as economic impacts are normally recognized to be the probable advantage to event hosts (Veres et al., 2 008). It is obvious for the hosts to have an inclination towards giving more importance to the economic impact, highly influenced by the tourism research. Economic advantages of an event are very vital to the host. Hence it is very imperative to have good frameworks for the measurement of this aspect. However, an accepted fact is that economic benefits are not the only advantage which comes with an event. Various elusive benefits have to also be measured to know how successful an event has been (Bowdin et al., 2006); Jones (2001) suggests that even if the former unconstructive effects are included having a limelight merely on straight expenses payback will still give an unfinished image. However, it is also to keep in mind that events can sometimes have negative and unplanned consequences and these penalties can lead to the event having both media and public attention for the wrong reasons (Allen et al., 2002). This has to be kept in mind during the planning and execution of the eve nt. The power of media in deciding how an event is shown is formidable. The media can have a strong social and culturalà impactà upon society. Thus the media can influence how the event is professed, and also how it is shown to remote audiences (Getz, D., 2007). Events can basically have two kinds of outcomes i.e., positive and negative impact on the host communities and stakeholders (Allen et al., 2002). Event failures can be very devastating, bringing in negative publicity, humiliation and expensive lawsuits (Bowdin et al., 2006). Hence a lot of importance is placed on the financial impacts of an event. Factors leading to this are that both the employers and government need to meet budget goals, deadlines, and also be ready with explanations for the expenditures and an important factor is that financial impacts can be easily measured (Allen et al., 2002). Getz, D. (2002) suggests fours main costs and benefits that have to be evaluated: tangible benefits, tangible costs, intang ible benefits and intangible costs. Also the methods of measurement or assessment used vary with the impacts to be measured or assessed. To calculate the overall impact of the event, social and cultural benefits cannot be left out. However, rather than following a statistical approach calculating them may require a narrative approach (Bowdin et al., 2006). The impact of an event is sometimes calculated well before the event actually takes place. This is because in many scenarios, after the event policy focus shifts elsewhere (Jones, 2001). Long-term effects of an event are very crucial. No matter the event being attended or not by the local community, the effects will be felt by them (Ritchie and Smith, 1991). The host society can be provided with a policy for putting forward their knowledge, hosting probable shareholders and endorsing new business opening by the event (Bowdin et al., 2006). These events can create possible employment opportunities during the construction phase (All en et al., 2002). One of the most important impacts of a mega-event is on the tourism industry which would bring in lot of visitors to a particular place which has never been a tour destination before (Getz, D., 2006). This paper focuses on the various impacts of DLF IPL on the South African community and how it has contributed towards the Indian economy. It also discusses the various advantages and disadvantages that are involved with DLF IPL. OVERVIEW OF DLF IPL The DLF IPL is organised by the well established event management organisation IMG WORLD, LONDON. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been produced by the joint venture between IMG and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). For the IPL IMG explored the most favourable fair as well as mercantile model and a huge amount of $724m were raised by carrying out the notable authorization sale procedure (IMG World, 2009). In India, IPL is one of the most economically victorious sports idea ever initiated. The IPL is played according to the most up-to-date cricket layout which is Twenty20; this decreases match playing time to three hours, and thus makes it ideal for major time television as well as live in-stadia spectators. The television production and distribution rights, franchise rights, event and venue management and sponsorship sales for the IPL is handled by the IMG. The shifting of the venue to South Africa in the year 2009 was taken care by IMG. IMPACT ON INDIAN ECONOMY DUE TO IPL SWITCH TO SOUTH AFRICA All the businesses in India right from the road trader to the publicity organizations holding millions of dollars of shares are faced financial crisis because of the shift of IPL from India to South Africa due to security reasons as the IPL dates conflicted with the general election dates in India. The market analysts sensed that this sudden move from India to South Africa has grinded down from the Indian marker an ample amount, adding up to the already existing despair of global financial slump. Last year the IPL had contributed up to 1 billion rupees to the Indian economy, but due to the shift to South Africa which involved a lot of additional expenditure the BCCI did not incur a lot of income. The media houses in India did undergo a major income loss, which was estimated to be from 500 million to 700 million rupees. The estimated loss when it came to the gate receipts was 500 million rupees. The hospitality industry as well as tourism industry had a major impact. But there was an advantage tagged to this shift as well which was that IPL is now seen by people as a tournament with international value. OVERALL IMPACT OF DLF IPL ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNITY According to Getz (2007) all events have a direct social and cultural impact on their participants, and sometime on their wider host communities. But, some events leave a legacy of greater awareness and participation in sporting and cultural activities (Bowdin et al., 2006). The Indian Premier League (IPL) has contributed a lot towards the education in South Africa (The Hindustan Times, 2009). According to Getz (2007) the financial profits are gained when the particular event can pull in extra income for the community benefits which is either in the form of endowments or funding. As stated by Fakir Hassen (2009) Lalit Modi, who is the man behind IPL proclaimed a scholarship of over eight million and this was one of the best programme towards community development in South Africa by a sports oriented organisation. This money given towards education benefits (Torkildsen, G., 2005) has also helped in the initiation of Help Educate and Teach (HEAT) programme that was commenced at the Ale xander Sinton High School in the suburb of Athlone. The schools and individual learners will be benefited by this programme. Lalit Modi stated that any attempt towards development and strengthening of individuals as well as nation always remains as a soul of superior education. He also stated that India has emerged as a successful nation because of its strong education basis: This emphasis on education is now paying off many times over as India has grown into an economic powerhouse far better equipped to lift people out of poverty(The Hindustan Times, 2009). The investment of DLF IPL in the in the education of South African community targets towards a prospect return (Getz, D., 2007) and cautious analyses of this is vital. According to one of the strategies set out by Bowdin et al. (2006) i.e., Local area strategy; the DLF IPL created a carnival atmosphere by celebrating cultures of the South African community which in turn led to the enhancement of community unity. According to the report by the Hindustan Times 32 schools have benefited from the HEAT programme. For the learners who attended the DLF IPL matches, with the cooperation of the producers of the television five learners were recognized at individual matches and their faces were displayed on the monitors in the stadium. Each one of these received 15,000 rands as part of their school fee. Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief Gerald Majola stated that the IPL model could be used to make this game a global sport event and this in turn would help other set-ups take a great leap as well. The benefits gained economically were considerable. During this period of economic crisis the IPL has built a strong base for the South Africas tourist industry (Bowdin et al., 2006) and also proved to set out to the world that it is capable of hosting the FIFA 2010. According to Allen et al.(2002) other than the expenses of the event the people who came for the event put in their money on tour, lodgings, and other services in South Africa and there was a increase in hotel room bookings by 40,000 which otherwise is normally very low during winter season in South Africa. The South Africa government is majorly focusing on tourism sector as an upcoming industry that is competent of increasing the economic benefits and employment opportunities (Bowdin et al., 2006). In addition to the tourism pro duced throughout this event, IPL has also involved a lot of media reporting (Allen et al., 2002) and due to this the South African community profile has gained importance (Getz, D., 2006). The IPL has not only boosted the confidence of the youthful South African cricket players but has also provided with an opportunity to take part in a sporting event that is recognized worldwide (The Business Standard, 2009). It is still sometimes argued by event boosters that mega events generate benefit from the legacy of infrastructure and venues, but this assertion can easily be wrong (Getz, D., 2007), because the basic purpose of IPL is very fruitful considering the fact that it brings the cricket stars worldwide who are against each other on nationalized defences into single squad (The Business Standard, 2009). This event has created a long lasting bond between the two countries (India and South Africa). Hosting the IPL in South Africa has not only made IPL a global brand, but has also brough t billions of income to the South African economy. SWOT ANALYSIS OF DLF IPL Based on the details in Indian Premier League (2009) the following have been identified to be the: STRENGTHS OF IPL: The Indian Premier League (IPL) follows the Twenty20 format of cricket. This is the shortest version of the game, thereby finishing within two and half hours of game play. Unlike the One day format, which takes a full day to complete, or the Test format spanning five days of play, the Twenty20 is fast-paced and electrifying. Thus pulling in a large crowd to watch the game even on weekdays. Also the IPL has employed people who can really market goods well. These highly trained economists maximize the revenue with their very clean and methodological approaches. This makes IPL an integrated sport. Further each team has players from different countries. This causes a wide range of support of different communities to a single team, thus making cricket globally accepted. The supremacy of the BCCI in the control of ICC has a lot of benefits to DLF IPL. The financial backing from BCCI and also the power to manipulate the dates of international cricket matches favours the IPL. WEAKNESS OF IPL The pace at which people lead their lives now, they hardly have time to lavishly spend on watching a sport. Since IPL has satisfied this need of theirs, people are happier to watch the twenty20 format. Lots of talk has been going on about the status of other formats of the game and how to revive it. But the truth is, IPL has damaged the image of One day cricket and Test cricket. Further, a lot of money is involved in the IPL. Failure of a team can hurt the managements financial position a lot. Teams also spend a lot on advertisement, cost of players, brand promotion. Hence sponsorship is hard to find for their overpriced rates. A team doing well will fare well. If not tough times lie ahead. OPPORTUNITIES OF IPL IPL has a budding fan following. Since it is striking and very attractive, a lot of potential sponsors and advertisers are willing to invest a lot in this event. The IPL has eight leagues. Each being responsible for itself in every sense. Every franchise has to market its team well and get a large fan following behind their team. This in the long term will generate a lot of revenue for them. There is a nice opening for teams to sell their brand name in forms of shirts, accessories and other memorabilia. Another important and vital opportunity for IPL is to target the teenagers. The older people will naturally have a stronger inclination to the traditional form of cricket. But the youth today will like this thrilling and breathtaking format. Each franchise will continue to pay the same fees till 2017-2018. Hence the teams need not worry about inflation, which has been a drawback in India for the past few years. THREATS OF IPL If the top players in world cricket cant be brought into IPL teams, it will lose its popularity. Further, the domestic season in Australia runs concurrent with IPL. If the Australian players are not allowed to choose IPL instead of their local teams, a lot of fan following will be lost. I mean does it really matter where you come from? The color of your skin, the culture and value you carry. Unless you are oppressing one race to feel good about yourself, Why should race matter. The fact is, It shouldnââ¬â¢t matter as long as you are honest and is respectful to others. Iââ¬â¢m sure that some of us have experienced this to some extent: When you make a friend who is from a different race, do you still classify him or her as black, white, tall or short, Fat or skinny, someone with long hair or short, Or someone with no legs on a wheel chair, Old or young? No! You donââ¬â¢t, although you might think of these every now and than, you donââ¬â¢t constantly think about these things. If someone constantly thinks about them, for me it means that there is something I dislike about it, and in either case I would probably end the relation anyway. It is for this exact reason that I donââ¬â¢t believe that race should not play a huge role, if any, in our society. When the Government Census is surveying Americans, although this is not the intention of the survey, its definitely not doing me the favor of having to categorizing me ââ¬Å"raceâ⬠. Many assumption and problems can arise from categorizing society by race, such as stereotyping, obstacles to job qualification and disruptions of peace in society. I realize the need for differentiation and diversity; after all it is what makes each and one us very unique and fascinating. However, Iââ¬â¢m not suggesting that we should all fall for the ââ¬Å"melting potâ⬠ideology either, But simply to have an open mind and see our selves as an American, and not categorize each other for any reason. For instance, if something is forgotten we wouldnââ¬â¢t think about it right! Discrimination works somewhat the same way; if the issue of race is constantly being raised as factor to everything we do in society, then people will instinctually differentiate or learn to discriminate against one another. Since discrimination is something taught or experienced and not inherited, society can learn to avoid stereotyping and discrimination among each other- by letting go of old ideals and mythology. For instance, when I came to America years ago. I could go anywhere and talk to anyone I pleased in the whole city. Frank Howellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07423653539859340315noreply@blogger.com0
